  • Self indulgent windbags

I’ve never left a podcast review before but episode 82 was actually the worst podcast episode I have ever listened to. I did not even know that an interview could be this bad and self indulgent with such utter disregard to the audience.

I believe this guy is successful but to not even have a succinct explanation of his current business model because he’s too xyz to be put in a box, is perplexing. The Wharton education is working I guess: The first half of the episode sounds like circular logic... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

10 years of newsletter advice in 65 minutes ft. Dan Oshinsky
Q: Overrated or underrated open rates?
Open rates are broadly overrated as a metric for everyday newsletters, but they still have value as a basic signal in specific contexts and for apples-to-apples comparisons, especially when selling products.
His newsletter makes $100K a year — he keeps zero ft. Seamus Hughes
Q: Why not broaden ads or seek grants, given the labor and costs involved?
Advertising is possible but misaligned with editorial independence; grants exist but are often nonprofit-focused and not a perfect fit for a national, for-profit-leaning newsroom; the host emphasizes donor-supported sustainability and editorial integrity.
His newsletter makes $100K a year — he keeps zero ft. Seamus Hughes
Q: How sustainable is the model if you don't take a salary and rely on a small paid base?
The model centers on high engagement and a loyal, civic-minded donor base; growth relies on converting free users and disciplined cost management, with expansions through partnerships and selective paywalls.
His newsletter makes $100K a year — he keeps zero ft. Seamus Hughes
Q: Who are the subscribers and what makes up your audience?
They are a cross-section of America, including media elites, judges, reporters, and librarians who value nonpartisan reporting and the unique access to court records Court Watch provides.
The 5 revenue streams of a $1M+ creator business ft. Jenn Lueke
Q: How did the cookbook launch impact your content calendar and business overall?
The cookbook boosted credibility and media exposure, required substantial planning and teamwork, and shifted attention to professional content development; it also influenced the calendar by aligning recipes, testing, and publication with broader marketing and subscriber initiatives.
