  • Logic and clarity in nutrition!

Happy to have found this pod - EC is articulate and offers loads of factual information. The interview format is effective and efficient! Don’t expect to hear long preambles and chit chat. They jump right in and tackle topics from cancer to bananas. All they are missing is a theme song by that guy from Islands.

Five Minute Answers: Postpartum Calorie Deficits, Falling in Love with Food, & More
Q: What are your thoughts on energy drinks and their impact on a young person's muscle-building efforts, given caffeine content and sleep considerations?
Caffeine can aid performance in appropriate doses and contexts, but sleep disruption is a major risk. For a 19-year-old, aim to limit caffeine to a reasonable total daily amount, consider timing to avoid sleep interference, and prioritize adequate total calories, protein, and recovery for muscle growth.
Five Minute Answers: Postpartum Calorie Deficits, Falling in Love with Food, & More
Q: Is the NPR piece about ultra-processed foods and the proposed 10-to-1 test and water test useful, or is it too impractical for real-world shopping and decision-making?
Defining terms and trying to classify foods can be educational but is not a perfect system. In practice, focus on overall dietary patterns, energy balance, and whole-food intake rather than rigid labels or ad-hoc tests that aren't realistic for busy families.
Five Minute Answers: Postpartum Calorie Deficits, Falling in Love with Food, & More
Q: What do you think about the Panoey metabolic testing approach for coaches or gym owners, and whether tests like VO2 max or resting metabolic rate are useful for delivering personal advice?
VO2 max and resting metabolic rate can be interesting data points but are not essential for guiding daily training or nutrition decisions. Real progress comes from tracking intake, body weight, and actual training performance. Tests may motivate some clients but should not replace actionable, outcome-focused guidance.
Five Minute Answers: Postpartum Calorie Deficits, Falling in Love with Food, & More
Q: What are your thoughts on the NYT piece about whether loving food is the secret to eating less of it, and the ideas around high road vs low road reinforcement in eating behavior?
While enjoying healthier foods can help, the environment and dopamine-driven reward signals still play a strong role in overeating. Practical guidance should balance helping people find enjoyable, nutritious options with strategies that address access, environment, and habitual patterns instead of relying solely on taste preferences.
Five Minute Answers: Postpartum Calorie Deficits, Falling in Love with Food, & More
Q: I would like your opinion and advice for pregnant and postpartum slash breastfeeding moms. What are these statements about extra calories and how many extra calories to allow during pregnancy slash postpartum?
In general, avoid fixed, universal numbers like 500 extra calories. Instead, track baseline intake for a meaningful period, look at weight changes, and adjust cautiously—breastfeeding may require sustaining calories to support milk supply, and weight loss should be gradual and not prioritized over milk production. The focus is on monitoring hunger, protein intake, and overall nourishment rather than chasing a single calorie target.
