  • A needed introduction to the law around parking

A great introduction to a surprisingly complex area of law. As somebody who doesn’t drive I had never considered how complicated parking can be and how much notice drivers must take of it. Also, on the back end, the issues that can arise for parking providers are numerous. Any issues that arise simply provide more work for lawyers :)

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

How elite corporate lawyers are advising private equity giants with Weil | Commercial Awareness Compass #78
Q: When deals are spanning multiple jurisdictions, what challenges may be different when you're involving regulators, investors or assets from different jurisdictions or regions?
The cross-border complexity includes cultural and legal differences, time zone coordination, and reconciling inputs from multiple jurisdictions into a coherent client-facing position, all while maintaining deal momentum.
How elite corporate lawyers are advising private equity giants with Weil | Commercial Awareness Compass #78
Q: And so then do you stick with that client for the whole time, or do you say start with, are you with the client just for the acquisition and just for the exit, or just any bits in between?
The approach varies by client, but the base case is to stay involved throughout the whole period so the firm can guide the exit and prevent costly missteps, while tailoring involvement to the complexity of the deal.
The quiet giants of the digital age | Commercial Awareness Compass #53
Q: What types of players typically build and own data centers, and who ends up paying for them?
There are multiple paths: large independent operators like Equinix or NTT build and lease to hyperscalers; hyperscalers may build their own facilities; private equity and institutional funds invest; and construction can be funded through a mix of equity and debt including project finance during construction.
Patent pending: how Trump’s pharma tariff shakes global medicine | Commercial Awareness Compass #54
Q: What exactly is the tariff and how would it be enforced?
The tariff is framed as a 100% levy on branded or patented pharmaceutical imports, with exemptions potentially available for manufacturers building in the US or for countries with trade agreements; enforcement will hinge on how ā€œbranded or patentedā€ is interpreted at borders, creating a wait-and-see scenario until precise guidelines emerge.
A major power shift for UK landlords | Commercial Awareness Compass #69
Q: How much is the power balance shifting between tenants and landlords, given these reforms?
There is a clear shift toward tenant protections with the removal of no-fault evictions and longer, more regulated processes; however, landlords retain some leverage through statutory grounds, mandatory court hearings, and new compliance requirements, creating a more complex but not entirely one-sided dynamic.
