Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

E32 Kevin Brooks. Exploring the coaching journey and the development of Wycombe District Swimming Club
Q: What three actions would you take if you started a new 140-150 member club today?
First, secure ample water time and build a culture that supports both community and performance from day one. Second, implement a three-pillar structure with clear leadership roles, ensuring you have a lead coach for junior development and a disability program to broaden inclusion. Third, establish consistent communication and expectations with parents and swimmers, including a long-term vision that encourages perseverance rather than chasing immediate results.
E32 Kevin Brooks. Exploring the coaching journey and the development of Wycombe District Swimming Club
Q: How do you manage parent expectations and keep them engaged without overwhelming communication channels?
Proactivity is key: provide a clear squad criteria document, hold regular meetings, align on club values, and ensure squad coaches own the parent interactions. Visible leadership and timely, transparent updates reduce friction and keep families informed about progression paths.
E32 Kevin Brooks. Exploring the coaching journey and the development of Wycombe District Swimming Club
Q: What does the future look like for Wycombe in terms of growing the program while keeping it financially viable?
The aim is to sustain a three-pillar model (community, development, performance) with strong governance, clear roles, and effective communication with parents. By balancing high-volume core sessions with targeted intensity and developing internal leadership, the club stays financially viable and socially valuable, while gradually increasing senior and international success.
E8 - Michael Glossop. Working with people that swim. They are not just swimmers!
Q: If you were to go back to coaching now, what would be the first three things you would do differently to protect balance and longevity?
He would deliberately write balance into the diary, schedule proper breaks, and set clear boundaries with stakeholders to prevent overextension and preserve energy for long-term success.
E8 - Michael Glossop. Working with people that swim. They are not just swimmers!
Q: So let's kind of cast our mind back to when you were in that full-time position. What did your leadership philosophy look like and what were its cornerstones?
His approach centered on adding value to people, building a legacy through how you influence others, and balancing high standards with human-centric coaching; he emphasizes teamwork, delegation, and sustainable practices over chasing medals.
