  • Brilliant show

Ben and Illya are so informed on the film making process that their questions are always spot on, and exactly what we fans of cinematography want to hear. I really enjoyed being interviewed by Ben about Late Night With The Devil. I’m not comfortable in the spotlight, but he asked such interesting questions that I was quickly at ease. I love this podcast. Get on it people!

  • Yikes

This podcast is not for you if you work in the industry and want meaningful, reasonably deep conversations. These guys are hard to listen to. I don’t know why they called this “the cinematography podcast” when neither of them are cinematographers or even have a reasonable knowledge of the craft to begin with.

If you want to listen to two dudes talk about random current events for 15 minutes before bringing the guest in, go for it. The interviews have basically no depth and sometimes don’t go m... more

  • Great insights!

I’m not in the industry at all. Just a movie dork and love all aspects especially how movies “look.” Anyway, always interesting guests and love when they get “inside baseball” about the creative process, lenses, and the rants! Thanks guys

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Evoking dread in Something Very Bad is Going to Happen
Q: How did you approach the camera's relationship to the lead character?
We built a guidebook for shooting Rachel that prioritized a continuous, immersive 'Rachel shot' using Steadicam, evolving to rolling/gimbaled and eventually handheld/body rig as the narrative deepened, always keeping the camera as a subjective extension of her experience.
Evoking dread in Something Very Bad is Going to Happen
Q: What was the starting point or inspirations for the show's visual language?
The starting point was to treat the show as a drama first, with horror shaping the audience's experience rather than the other way around; inspirations included Rosemary's Baby, David Lynch, and a filmic approach that embraces naturalism before introducing horror elements.
Lawrence Sher ASC: filming Apex in the Australian wilderness
Q: How did streaming influence your approach to Apex compared to a traditional theatrical release?
Streaming allowed more creative freedom and a broader audience reach without Rotten Tomatoes pressure; it also encouraged us to push for cinematic quality that translates well on home screens while maintaining theater-like scope and ambition.
Lawrence Sher ASC: filming Apex in the Australian wilderness
Q: What was the approach to making the wilderness feel visceral and authentic while shooting in such remote locations?
We leaned into a documentary-style toolkit, used lightweight, backpackable gear, previsualized how to move the camera with minimal crew, and relied on a strong collaboration with the director and local pilots to create believable, on-location energy.
DP Greta Zozula on the look of The Testaments
Q: Tell me about developing the look for Daisy and how it differs from Agnes.
She describes switching Daisy into a more naturalistic, handheld, quasi-documentary style with anamorphic lenses to differentiate Daisy's world from Agnes's, and emphasizes testing color palettes and lens choices to ensure the two worlds feel distinct while cohesive within the show's universe.
