  • Great for professionals as well as BTS fans

The hosts never fail to keep the conversation with their guests informative without getting too technically dry.

  • Brilliant show

Ben and Illya are so informed on the film making process that their questions are always spot on, and exactly what we fans of cinematography want to hear. I really enjoyed being interviewed by Ben about Late Night With The Devil. I’m not comfortable in the spotlight, but he asked such interesting questions that I was quickly at ease. I love this podcast. Get on it people!

  • Yikes

This podcast is not for you if you work in the industry and want meaningful, reasonably deep conversations. These guys are hard to listen to. I don’t know why they called this “the cinematography podcast” when neither of them are cinematographers or even have a reasonable knowledge of the craft to begin with.

If you want to listen to two dudes talk about random current events for 15 minutes before bringing the guest in, go for it. The interviews have basically no depth and sometimes don’t go m... more

  • Great insights!

I’m not in the industry at all. Just a movie dork and love all aspects especially how movies “look.” Anyway, always interesting guests and love when they get “inside baseball” about the creative process, lenses, and the rants! Thanks guys

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

2026 Academy Awards nominations with Jenelle Riley
Q: Illya, are the Vegas odds also on things like all the categories?
Yes, odds exist for many categories with Michael Bauman frequently listed as favored in cinematography and other categories showing more variance; the odds can shift as campaigning and precursors unfold.
2026 Academy Awards nominations with Jenelle Riley
Q: Jenelle, where are the betting markets putting this one?
Markets show a strong front-runner in One Battle After Another, with Sinners and Train Dreams as close contenders, while others are considered longshots; nevertheless, Oscar outcomes remain highly uncertain.
James Whitaker: Good Luck Have Fun Don’t Die’s visual chaos
Q: Why was the LED wall and interactive lighting such a big part of the AI room sequence, and how was it executed technically?
We built a massive LED wall and surrounding light boxes, synchronized with moving elements and VFX, and used projectors to project content onto actors' faces to create a responsive, chaotic environment that felt part of the narrative and part of the lighting itself.
James Whitaker: Good Luck Have Fun Don’t Die’s visual chaos
Q: What role did Gore Verbinski's storyboarding play in shaping the shoot, and how did you collaborate on the visuals?
Gore boards almost every frame himself and uses six to seven white cards deep with his drawings; we would rehearse with Sam and Gore, then Gore would refine and present frames, guiding the lighting, composition, and camera movements to align with his vision.
James Whitaker: Good Luck Have Fun Don’t Die’s visual chaos
Q: How did you approach breaking down the 10-page monologue sequence to shoot it efficiently while keeping it engaging?
We treated it like a one-act play, rehearsing and then breaking the sequence into pieces that could be shot in a way that preserved tempo, with careful planning for camera moves and P.O.V. to maintain energy and coherence across a long, performance-driven segment.
