  • Great for professionals as well as BTS fans

The hosts never fail to keep the conversation with their guests informative without getting too technically dry.

This is a great podcast. The guys know their stuff and it is an unvaluable resource for filmmakers and movie buffs. Cheers from México.

  • Brilliant show

Ben and Illya are so informed on the film making process that their questions are always spot on, and exactly what we fans of cinematography want to hear. I really enjoyed being interviewed by Ben about Late Night With The Devil. I’m not comfortable in the spotlight, but he asked such interesting questions that I was quickly at ease. I love this podcast. Get on it people!

  • Yikes

This podcast is not for you if you work in the industry and want meaningful, reasonably deep conversations. These guys are hard to listen to. I don’t know why they called this “the cinematography podcast” when neither of them are cinematographers or even have a reasonable knowledge of the craft to begin with.

If you want to listen to two dudes talk about random current events for 15 minutes before bringing the guest in, go for it. The interviews have basically no depth and sometimes don’t go m... more

  • Great insights!

I’m not in the industry at all. Just a movie dork and love all aspects especially how movies “look.” Anyway, always interesting guests and love when they get “inside baseball” about the creative process, lenses, and the rants! Thanks guys

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Suburban street photography and voyeurism in DTF St. Louis
Q: How do you come up with the elements to turn it into that intentionality?
The process is highly deliberate and collaborative with Steve; involves pre-approved reference imagery, varied wides and alt-wides, and planning for flexible coverage to allow meaningful cuts and emotional impact without traditional coverage.
Suburban street photography and voyeurism in DTF St. Louis
Q: How does voyeurism play into the show?
Voyeurism is a fundamental storytelling device, using long scenes and grainy footage to invite the audience into private spaces and gradually reveal the full story, aligning with the street photography reference and the frame-in-frame concept.
Peter Konczal, ASC on Black Rabbit’s raw, low-contrast look
Q: What advice would you give a young DP pursuing long-form television?
Shoot a lot, make shorts, build a community of collaborators, and reach out to directors who share your taste. Build relationships with rental houses and gear suppliers to create a sustainable path, and always seek opportunities to push the storytelling language with signature moments.
Peter Konczal, ASC on Black Rabbit’s raw, low-contrast look
Q: How does collaboration with directors and producers shape the visual language of a long-form project?
Collaboration is ongoing from pre-production through shoots, with frequent planning, location scouting, and dialogue with writers and showrunners to align on tone. Once filming begins, the team maintains flexibility, allowing the look to evolve across episodes while keeping the core storytelling goals in focus.
Peter Konczal, ASC on Black Rabbit’s raw, low-contrast look
Q: How much of the look is a function of LUTs, lenses, tuning, and camera work?
They divided the look into equal parts across LUTs, detuned lenses, and camera work, with a deliberate low-contrast LUT and smoke-filter customization playing a central role. They stressed that each element supports the other to create the signature earthy, blue-tinged palette and the raw, intimate feeling of the scenes.
