Reviews

4.7 out of 5 stars from 41 ratings
  • Kenny is good at this

Kenny says in the podcast that he pretends that his questions are to sate his audience’s curiosity, but it’s really just things he wants to know in order to be a better DP. That’s what good interviewing is, though, so I hope he keeps following his own curiosity.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

242: Aerial Cinematographer Phil Arntz
Q: What have you learned from working with high-profile DPs like Tom Cruise or Claudio Miranda?
The key takeaway is that there isn't a one-size-fits-all approach; you must adapt to each director and project, blending exploration with pre-visualization and on-site testing to achieve authentic, high-impact moments.
242: Aerial Cinematographer Phil Arntz
Q: How do you handle the trade-off between director vision and practical limitations in aviation shoots?
He explains that you brief the brief, assess airspace and permits, then adapt on the day, sometimes shifting plans to deliver the best available shot while staying within safety and regulatory boundaries.
242: Aerial Cinematographer Phil Arntz
Q: What was your cinematography life prior to aerial work?
Phil describes starting with corporate work and shorts, leveraging networking and opportunistic gigs in places like Dubai to gain access to new gear, which eventually led to specializing in aerial work.
237: "300" & "Watchmen" Retrospective with Larry Fong, ASC
Q: What initial fears did you have about shooting a big feature like 300 as your first major feature?
The main concerns were endurance and whether two months of shooting would be feasible, given the shift from short-form to a full-scale feature with a painterly, graphic-novel aesthetic, and ensuring the look could emulate that comic-book feel without copying frame-for-frame.
235: "How to Get to Heaven from Belfast" Cinematographer Ashley Barron, ACS
Q: How did you end up getting tied into the Doctor Who universe and light that specific room to feel normal yet in line with the storytelling?
There were multiple conversations early on about what needed to be seen through the windows and how to balance authenticity with controlled visuals, ensuring the space reads as real and momentary while retaining the show's through line and tone.
