Reviews

4.7 out of 5 stars from 37 ratings
  • Kenny is good at this

Kenny says in the podcast that he pretends that his questions are to sate his audience’s curiosity, but it’s really just things he wants to know in order to be a better DP. That’s what good interviewing is, though, so I hope he keeps following his own curiosity.

Q: How can I make your job better?
The best relationship with the DP is when they are non-concerned with the frame, allowing the operator to work with the director.
217: "Frankenstein" Cinematographer Dan Laustsen, ASC DFF
Q: How do you keep your lighting from becoming muddy?
It focuses on keeping exposure high, as underexposure can lead to muddiness.

Q: What are you aiming for when you use different lighting styles?
It's about creating direction and definition with the light while allowing room for creativity.
217: "Frankenstein" Cinematographer Dan Laustsen, ASC DFF
Q: Did you make the transition from film to digital with open arms, or was that a tough one for you?
Initially against it, but now finds it fantastic and has nothing against shooting digital.
217: "Frankenstein" Cinematographer Dan Laustsen, ASC DFF
Q: So how much of that camera movement is instinctual? How much are you planning?
A lot of the movement is planned, but there is also improvisation with Guillermo, adjusting the shot as it unfolds.
