Reviews

4.7 out of 5 stars from 42 ratings
  • Kenny is good at this

Kenny says in the podcast that he pretends that his questions are to sate his audience’s curiosity, but it’s really just things he wants to know in order to be a better DP. That’s what good interviewing is, though, so I hope he keeps following his own curiosity.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

247: "Widow's Bay" Cinematographer Christian Sprenger, ASC
Q: What was the core philosophy behind the look development for the show?
The core philosophy was to let the audience work a little to figure out the tone, using restrained, grounded cues rather than obvious jokes or scares. They built a Look Bible as a collaborative tool to communicate the world, then used testing, color science, and selective lens choices to achieve a distinct, evolving look that blends nostalgia with contemporary sensibilities.
248: "Murderbot" Cinematographer Tobias Datum
Q: What new challenges did Murderbot present for you as a cinematographer, especially given its sci‑fi context?
The core principles stay the same: do your homework, plan, and be ready to adapt. The sci‑fi elements mainly test your ability to design believable environments with LED walls, practicals, and VFX integration while keeping the actors' performances at the center.
246: "Spider-Noir" Cinematographers Darran Tiernan & Peter Deming, ASC
Q: What was the balance between chasing a traditional noir aesthetic and using modern digital technology?
We treated film stock as two separate palettes, embraced the authenticity of period lighting, and used digital tools to support, not replace, the noir language, preserving a timeless feel while allowing contemporary storytelling.
246: "Spider-Noir" Cinematographers Darran Tiernan & Peter Deming, ASC
Q: How did you approach pre-production to establish the noir look for Spider Noir?
We gathered countless visual references, ran tests, and created two distinct LUTs to govern the black-and-white and color looks, ensuring every department understood the palette and mood from the outset.
242: Aerial Cinematographer Phil Arntz
Q: What have you learned from working with high-profile DPs like Tom Cruise or Claudio Miranda?
The key takeaway is that there isn't a one-size-fits-all approach; you must adapt to each director and project, blending exploration with pre-visualization and on-site testing to achieve authentic, high-impact moments.
