  • Brilliant and timely

I have been listening to this podcast over the last few weeks as I’m part of the Practioner Health program as a clinician. These episodes are so applicable to all those working within the NHS particularly in Practioner roles and real food for thought. Lee does a amazing job of allowing the guest to have the unrushed and unfettered access to a platform and lots of space to talk. She has a really warm and “enabling” manner with her guests and her technique of “less is more” clearly gets the best o... more

  • Depth and practicality

This podcast has become a staple in my week. As a GP and a therapist, Lee really seems to get the most out of her guests. Through these conversations the guest’s reflections are taken to another level, but also leave you with practical advice and ideas that continue to shape your thinking throughout the week. I really recommend this podcast both on a personal and professional level 🌟

  • Engaging and helpful

Lee not only leads engaging conversations with her guests but they are clearly underpinned by her training as both a gp and CBT therapist. I love the experiential moments she drops in too - i wish there was more practical modelling of psychological tools in podcasts like this!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Finding a Way Through Winter Low Mood
Q: What practical steps can someone take to start improving mood in winter?
Start with small, intentional actions: move your body daily, expose yourself to daylight, engage in meaningful connections, and cultivate 'thin slices of joy.' Use a simple well-being plan to track what helps, and don't hesitate to seek professional support if mood interferes with daily life.
Finding a Way Through Winter Low Mood
Q: What changes do you see in winter, and how does Practitioner Health adapt to those changes?
Winter brings shorter days, less light, and higher stress, especially for health professionals. We see more people seeking help, with a focus on psychological safety and compassionate leadership at work. We guide individuals to notice what's happening, pause, and seek support early, using familiar tools like well-being plans and access to confidential care.
Finding a Way Through Winter Low Mood
Q: Helen, could you start by introducing yourself and sharing a little about Practitioner Health and your role then?
I'm Dr. Helen Garr, a GP by background, former nurse and psychologist, now Medical Director of NHS Practitioner Health, a national confidential mental health and addiction treatment service for health and care workers. We've supported thousands of NHS staff over 17 years, helping them stay well so they can deliver the care patients deserve.
Changing How We See Weight And Health
Q: What about the stigma surrounding these treatments among patients and professionals?
There's significant stigma from both patients and some professionals; reframing obesity as a chronic condition and separating the stigma from the treatment can help patients accept appropriate therapies when indicated.
Changing How We See Weight And Health
Q: How do you see the role of medications in weight management alongside lifestyle changes?
Medications can catalyze long-term change but must be paired with sustained lifestyle support; stopping medication without solid lifestyle adaptations often leads to weight regain. Some patients benefit greatly when medications are prescribed thoughtfully and with an emphasis on informed decision-making.
