Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Senate gambling chair on New York's racing and casino landscape
Q: How should New York address prediction markets and online gaming moving forward?
Regulation is preferable to litigation; bringing prediction markets into a legal framework would protect consumers, prevent misuse, and retain revenue within New York, especially for education, while maintaining guardrails and oversight.
Senate gambling chair on New York's racing and casino landscape
Q: What is the rationale behind introducing a one-year tax relief for Resorts World?
The goal is to resolve a misinterpretation of the 56% tax rate and to ensure the payments that support the horse racing industry, including NYRA's obligations, are properly accounted for while keeping the industry financially viable during a transition.
State budget sweetens public sector pension benefits
Q: Why not focus on higher starting salaries instead of pensions—why spend money on the pension as well?
The host and Josh discuss that while upfront salaries are important, investing in pensions can be cheaper over the long run and better align with workforce stability and career-long compensation, reducing turnover and overtime costs.
State budget sweetens public sector pension benefits
Q: So what do you see ultimately as the benefit to New York state for these changes when considering the costs?
Josh argues the long-term benefits include a stable, higher-quality workforce capable of delivering essential services, with pensions serving as a recruitment and retention tool and a way to balance long-term costs against immediate salary expenses.
Stagnant state funding for opioid epidemic fight
Q: How do federal budget proposals affect state programs like OASIS?
Federal proposals, though proposed and debated, could reduce or reorganize grants and agencies, potentially impacting Medicaid, work requirements, and overall funding for substance-use treatment.
