When a new episode of The Broken Copier shows up it’s always my first choice. Even though I’m a science teacher, it’s refreshing to hear the perspectives of people who are actually IN THE CLASSROOM! Thanks for all you do!

  • Broken Copier; Helpful Fixes

I’m late to the Broken Copier party and was stoked by the latest solo episode. I appreciate not only the practical and mindful commentary, but also the production quality which feels akin to a This American Life segment far more than a classroom teacher self-producing his work. Well worth digging into the back of the stacks.

What does "good teaching" even look like?
Q: How has your path shaped your view of good teaching in the current moment?
Zach explains how personal growth, faith, and the need to sustain a healthy teaching life led him to scale back teaching load, invest in writing and publishing, and center student relationships and authentic engagement over rigid curricula.
What does "good teaching" even look like?
Q: Explain that choice.
The host asks Zach to elaborate on why he chose to frame teaching as a verb and why living, relational practice matters more than standardized technique, which Zach answers by describing his early Belize experience and his emphasis on relationship and discipline as the core of good teaching.
What if we tended the soil of our schools?
Q: Can you elaborate on the experience with your daughter and how it shaped your views on what teachers should be able to do in order to support students?
The shift came when teachers moved from a one-size-fits-all approach to meeting her where she was, reteaching foundational skills when needed, and providing clear, empathetic feedback. This demonstrated how relational, cognitive, and emotional supports are essential, not optional, for student growth.
A no-zeroes grading policy that...works?
Q: What has surprised you most about implementing this grading approach in your school?
Seeing how collaboration with a fellow teacher and administrator-created structures helped build a coalition, and how transparent communication with students and families reduces fear and backlash while increasing trust and willingness to engage with the policy.
