  • Great podcast

I really enjoy listening to The Bridge. The guests are great and knowledgeable, and the podcast shares information about China that you simply won’t hear in Western media. I’ve learned a lot about the country and gained a much better understanding of cultural differences.

  • Informative and entertaining podcast for an American like me getting prepared to visit China!

I’ll be visiting China from the US in a month and this podcast has helped ease anxieties and brought more understanding to the culture for me. I would love an episode on other ways a foreigner can get prepared to go to China - such as misconceptions about unlawful arrests (misinformation spread online makes China seem dangerous), medications we can or should bring, to use a VPN or not, any adjustments you had to make when going to China, etc. Thanks again!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Can the working class win?
Q: Can a capitalist country have achieved China's level of development, and why does governance by a communist party matter?
While some achievements might be replicated in capitalist settings, the argument is that long-term planning, public ownership in strategic sectors, and a party representing the working class enable coherent development trajectories that prioritize social welfare and national goals over short-term shareholder value.
Can the working class win?
Q: What makes China's economic system fundamentally socialist, according to your view?
China's system is driven by state ownership of commanding heights, five-year plans, and mass mobilization that directs surplus into public goods rather than private profits, combining a Marxist-Leninist-led political structure with strategic sectors managed for national development.
Western socialism and China's rise
Q: What could be done with trillion dollars in the US if redirected toward social programs instead of military spending?
The guest argues for reallocating funds from militarism to social programs like housing, healthcare, education, and infrastructure, arguing this would reduce poverty and homelessness and foster a healthier society, while criticizing the current military-heavy budget.
Western socialism and China's rise
Q: What about socialists in the US, what do they think of Chinese socialism and how they relate to Cuba, North Korea, and Vietnam?
Cruse explains there is a spectrum within US socialists, with some admiring China's advancements while others critique certain policies; he emphasizes distinguishing between imperialist narratives and ground realities, and notes some US socialists advocate for engagement with socialist models abroad while maintaining independence from traditional party politics.
Western socialism and China's rise
Q: My question really is, do you think it's even theoretically possible that Democrats might someday become more socialist-like? Or is it just a game to control people?
Nick suggests that the idea of Democrats becoming truly socialist is unlikely; the discussion centers on the need for independent, outside organizing and a shift away from relying on established parties to push for real working-class gains.
