His interviews are like interrogations. This nebbish also talks to his guests like he “of course”! knows everything and everyone. Oy vey.

  • Hope You Like Forwarding Ads

I just discovered this podcast at someone else’s recommendation. Bob and his guests are typically great (unless they’re young and famous or old and British). Other than that, after the first season he decided to include several 2.5 minute ads randomly in each episode and they became a nuisance. I have been listening for about a month and am now in about Spring 2020. Not sure I can make it to 3/2026 if the bombardment of 3-minute ads continue

  • Bob is a legend

Great interviews done in a somewhat unconventional style. Might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but he’s done/lived the research. Deep dives into topics, personalities and music. Highly recommend.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

David Beard
Q: What was your approach to interviewing, and how did you avoid the ' canned memory' trap?
He discusses using pebbled memory prompts and pacing questions to jog memories, along with bringing a photographer and recorder to capture off-the-cuff moments that reveal deeper histories.
David Beard
Q: How did you first get involved with The Beach Boys universe, and what drew you to their story?
Beard explains discovering Jan and Dean, the Hale of the Beach Boys lore through records, fanzines, and a growing fascination with their early dynamics, which led him to start The Quarterly and eventually to interviewing many of the band members.
Marsha Vlasic
Q: What was your experience breaking into higher-level agencies like ICM and later starting your own venture?
It was challenging due to gender dynamics and culture, but I leveraged proven relationships, delivered results, and eventually earned leadership roles; running my own setup demonstrated my commitment to autonomy, control, and building a defensible artist roster.
Marsha Vlasic
Q: How did you start in the agency world and what was your path to becoming a full agent?
I started in a tough, hands-on environment with a small agency where I did everything—from answering phones to booking tours—and gradually learned the mechanics of touring, client relationships, and deal-making, which prepared me to take on bigger rosters and leadership roles.
Lenny Kaye
Q: What was it like working with Patti Smith and the evolution of Horses?
Patti's artistry and demand for creative freedom shaped Horses; John Cale's production pushed for more arrangement and improvisation, while Patti and the team balanced avant experimentation with accessibility, culminating in a record that felt like a new kind of rock story combining poetry and music.
