Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 181 - Pete Smith - Co-Founder, CEO & President of Remix Therapeutics
Q: What moment made you decide to leave science and start Remix Therapeutics?
Pete describes a clear inflection point at Atlas Venture, where the team moved from traditional pharma paths toward building a platform that could systematically target RNA processing, driven by new tools and the desire to address disease drivers at the RNA level.
Episode 175 - Joe Jimenez - Co-Founder & Managing Director at Aditum Bio
Q: If you could dine with three people from any era, who would you choose and why?
Abraham Lincoln for leadership humility and relentless will, Charles Darwin to understand evolutionary biology and its impact on modern science, and Bruce Lee for a practical perspective on discipline and performance. These figures reflect leadership, scientific thinking, and personal excellence that influence his approach to business and science.
Episode 175 - Joe Jimenez - Co-Founder & Managing Director at Aditum Bio
Q: How does your insider experience at Novartis influence how you design Aditum to be attractive for pharma to acquire?
Diligence includes identifying likely buyers early and understanding exactly what evidence pharma would require to transact, including anonymous discussions about disease states and mechanisms to gauge what would trigger a sale. This user-informed diligence helps shape programs so pharma can readily take them into phase three and commercialization if the data support it.
Episode 175 - Joe Jimenez - Co-Founder & Managing Director at Aditum Bio
Q: How does Aditum decide when to in-license a drug, build a company, or pursue acquisition versus maintaining as a standalone program?
Aditum uses a disciplined, three-part criteria: a mechanism must plausibly impact the disease with genetic or prior clinical evidence, a homogeneous patient population for definitive results, and a design of a proof-of-concept trial that yields a clear efficacy signal within their hold period, typically around three years. They then decide whether to sell, syndicate, or continue development based on data and potential returns.
Episode 175 - Joe Jimenez - Co-Founder & Managing Director at Aditum Bio
Q: What was the not-so-obvious insight you had about biotech company formation that VCs might have missed, and what gave you conviction in building a single-asset-to-multiple-assets model?
The insight was that there are many more drugs discovered than can be developed, so there was an opportunity to create a late-stage incubator that could take promising drugs and prove their efficacy signals efficiently. The model leverages a small investment team to select assets and a full-service development team to run programs, enabling capital efficiency and faster go/no-go decisions across multiple assets.
