  • Not that funny

As a psychologist I enjoy the depth and breadth of discussions. There are frequently attention-getting stories of the week that are quite amusing. However, much of the time, during the first part of the podcast, Bills’s laughter is appallingly inappropriate to the context and can be disconcerting. Honestly, it sounds a bit thought-disordered.

  • Excellent Episide- March 1

    Update:

Joe Cirincione speaks with confidence but is incorrect. The US did not run out incumbent and that is why Donald Trump has a 2nd term. Look at US history- incumbents win reelection unless we are in a recession. We are not in a recession thanks to Joe Biden.

You guys may feel better thinking that incumbents losing globally indicates that Biden would have lost- but it’s only lazy speculation on your part. It may be your truth. But it’s not the truth.

  • Great pod with Rev Jim Wallis.

He spoke so eloquently and hit the nail on the head. Thank you for having him on. My husband and I listened twice through the mention of his first day in South Africa with Bishop Desmond Tutu. We found some calm to ground us through a corrupt, authoritarian regime. Thanks again, always an interesting, thoughtful discussion.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Lamar Alexander on Saving Democracy, Standing Up to Trump, and Why Young People Should Run for Office.
Q: Would you have voted differently in the second impeachment trial given what you know now?
He declines to speculate on a jury decision years after the fact, but suggests that encouraging a mob to overturn an election is a high crime or misdemeanor and that accountability matters for the health of democracy.
Lamar Alexander on Saving Democracy, Standing Up to Trump, and Why Young People Should Run for Office.
Q: What was your reaction to the president's actions in purging Republican senators who voted against him?
Alexander expresses concern that purging allies could erode Senate functioning and warns that loyalty alone won't sustain a functional majority; he emphasizes the importance of independent judgment and the potential risk to governance.
The unfolding catastrophe of Trump’s war on Iran with David Rothkopf.
Q: What are the domestic political implications of this conflict, and how should accountability be pursued without undermining democratic processes?
Accountability should focus on addressing the conduct of the administration, the influence of billionaires and special interests, and reforming institutions like the Supreme Court and electoral processes to safeguard democracy, while pursuing policy reforms that actually align with the public's kitchen-table needs.
The unfolding catastrophe of Trump’s war on Iran with David Rothkopf.
Q: We're gonna start with the unfolding catastrophe of Trump's war in Iran. How did we get here and what are the core strategic failures you see?
The core failures include not achieving the stated military objectives, Iran retaining most of its missile and drone capabilities, and the broader strategic goals being unachieved while regional stability deteriorates and allied trust erodes, signaling a larger defeat for U.S. foreign policy.
Truman and The Bomb. Plus: Who Controls Nuclear Weapons. The Truth about Iran’s Nuclear Ambitions. — with Author Alex Wellerstein
Q: Why did you decide to write this book now, given the extensive prior scholarship on Truman and the atomic bomb?
The author explains that the Kyoto controversy and the broader historical questions reveal core moments that ripple through Cold War and present policy, arguing that revisiting these events provides essential insights often missing in traditional histories.
