  • The best

Every time I watch a new-to-me classic movie, I’m so excited to see if TBC has covered it. And half the time, they have! It’s just a fun podcast with hosts who aren’t afraid to talk about patriarchy alongside genocide, racism, fascism, environmental destruction, and unfortunately so on and so forth. Having gone back in the archives, it’s been cool to see the evolution of this podcast into something really intersectional and thoughtful and special. It’s also very fun - truly a romp! Also highly re... more

  • Used to like

Are you guys OK? I used to love this podcast, but I now find it to be miserable to listen to because you both seem kind of miserable and like you don’t enjoy any film you watch. I understand wanting to look at art through a critical lens, but life can also be joyful and beautiful and funny. And—as other reviewers have pointed out—the overt anti-semitism has become quite troubling so I can’t support what you’re doing. Best of luck.

  • Please know something about the movie

I came to this pod because I wanted to hear one on Little Miss Sunshine. These gals just watched this but still mispronounced Nietzsche, and repeatedly mispronounced Paul Dano’s name. This pod reminds me of the SNL skit with the incredibly boring show hosts Molly Shannon and Ana Gasteyer do. I turned it off 20 minutes in.

  • Smiles

Came to the pod by way of Sixteenth Minute by Jamie, needed to still be able to hear her voice. One of the few pods in my rotation that I find myself laughing out loud and smiling to myself - a much needed reprieve while still holding movies to account!

  • Super fan here

I’ve been listening to this show since… 2018? 2019? I’ve been obsessed since the day I found it. Love to see the growth over the years. Hope it goes on for as long as Caitlin and Jamie choose to keep it going

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Fall (2006) with Ali
Q: What are the didactic implications of using a child as the co-narrator?
The guest and hosts discuss how Alexandria's input reframes Roy's revenge plot into a more nuanced, collaborative story that foregrounds care, empathy, and a push for diversity in voice and perspective.
Appropriate Behavior with Melody Kamali
Q: What is the Bechdel Test and why is it relevant to this movie?
The Bechdel Test is a metric that checks whether two named female characters talk to each other about something other than a man; this film navigates that framework by including multiple Bechdel-passing moments and using it to discuss representation and the complexity of female relationships within a diaspora context.
Pretty Woman with Andrea Werhun and Nicole Bazuin
Q: Could this kind of film be made today, perhaps by a company like Disney, and what would change?
The guests discuss modern sensitivities around representation, power, and labor, suggesting more explicit attention to consent, voice from sex workers, and avoiding simplistic wealth-hero narratives while acknowledging nostalgia and market realities of big studios.
Pretty Woman with Andrea Werhun and Nicole Bazuin
Q: What stood out to you on this viewing, especially in relation to representation of sex work?
Guests highlight moments that foreground Vivian's agency, the collaboration with sex workers in the film, and the balance between critique and celebration of romance, while recognizing the era's limitations and how the film negotiates its happy ending.
Pretty Woman with Andrea Werhun and Nicole Bazuin
Q: What are your histories with the movie, and what did you each bring to this viewing?
The hosts recount their personal histories with Pretty Woman, noting how revisiting the film under the Bechdel lens can reshape understanding of its treatment of class, gender, and romance; the guests frame their perspectives from Modern Whore's focus on authentic sex-work representation.
