  • This is how to autoimmune party!

It is 100% worth listening to ALL of these episodes. I am especially enjoying being walked through the scientific articles on Hashimoto’s disease and IBD. The other episodes about flares, diving into meal plans, new books coming out, are also entertaining and informative. Super excited about the IBS book. I feel like there is a lot of fun and curiosity and learning in this latest season. ALSO all previous seasons have so much actionable information as well. A must listen for humans with aut... more

The Menopause Gut with Cynthia Thurlow, NP (Ep 083)
Q: What practical steps can someone take to support gut and immune health during this transition?
Prioritize sleep and stress management, moderate and consistent exercise, a nutrient-dense diet high in fiber to support short-chain fatty acids, and mindful reintroduction/elimination testing for food triggers. Vagus nerve activation, breath work, and nature exposure can help balance the autonomic nervous system, while targeted strategies around fiber and gut health help reduce inflammation and support immune regulation.
The Menopause Gut with Cynthia Thurlow, NP (Ep 083)
Q: How does the gut microbiome interact with immune function during midlife transitions?
The gut microbiome interfaces with multiple body systems (gut-bone, gut-brain, gut-immune). Declining estrogen alters microbial diversity, increasing inflammatory species and reducing short-chain fatty acid production, which can modulate immune tolerance and trigger autoimmune tendencies. A healthier, diverse microbiome supports immune regulation and gut integrity, which is especially important as hormones fluctuate.
The Menopause Gut with Cynthia Thurlow, NP (Ep 083)
Q: Can you explain what perimenopause and menopause actually are and how hormones shift during this time?
Perimenopause begins with a reduction in progesterone, leading to relative estrogen dominance, and gradually shifts hormonal balance across early, mid, and late phases. Menopause is defined by 12 consecutive months without a menstrual cycle, after which the body no longer menstruates. These hormonal shifts affect sleep, mood, metabolism, gut function, and immune signaling, creating a period of variability and individual differences in symptom presentation.
Ask Mickey Anything: Your Biggest AIP Questions, Answered (Ep 079)
Q: What are two practical topics around real-life barriers like energy, cooking, and access, and how can people manage these challenges while staying on AIP?
Normalize the reality of limited energy and cooking capacity, plan for low-capacity days with simple, compliant options (grocery shortcuts, meal delivery, or ready-to-heat meals), and use strategies like eating out or using services to sustain nourishment without adding stress. Emphasize that perfection isn't the goal; nourishment and consistency matter more.
Ask Mickey Anything: Your Biggest AIP Questions, Answered (Ep 079)
Q: If someone is two months into AIP with no improvements, what could be missing or interfering?
Possible issues include not being truly in elimination (hidden ingredients or cross-contamination), undereating, nervous-system stress, underlying infections, or other non-autoimmune conditions. It may also reflect an expectation/timeline mismatch; continuing the elimination for a bit longer and ensuring compliance can help, along with addressing stress and checking for other health issues.
