  • End the music

Please please PLEASE no one is listening to TED Health to hear annoying jazz playing in the background. Why do podcasts think they need music played while someone is speaking? It’s SO annoying I cannot listen to podcasts I’m interested in.

Why building new proteins from scratch is our new superpower | David Baker
Q: What do you foresee in six years from now when we speak again?
I expect to see many more medicines approved for use in humans and solutions to major problems that we haven't even conceived of yet, as science is progressing rapidly.
Why building new proteins from scratch is our new superpower | David Baker
Q: How did you begin to think about sustainability work as a potential use case for this?
After developing methods to design proteins that can make or break chemical bonds, we recognized that we could solve environmental issues, such as plastic degradation and chemical breakdown, using these engineered proteins.
Why building new proteins from scratch is our new superpower | David Baker
Q: Can you talk about how exactly you did this?
We initially studied how amino acid sequences determine protein structures, then developed computer programs to design proteins from scratch instead of just analyzing nature's proteins.
Why building new proteins from scratch is our new superpower | David Baker
Q: Why has this been such a challenging thing for humanity to accomplish?
Designing new proteins has been challenging because the existing proteins in nature have evolved over billions of years to have precise functions and properties, making the idea of creating new ones seem unattainable. Early attempts were often unsuccessful, and methods for designing proteins with new functions didn't exist.
Interview: What happens to your brain without any social contact? with Dr. Vivek Murthy
Q: How do we balance the risks and benefits of social media?
While social media was intended to connect us, its risks, especially for mental health, are often understated, making it crucial to evaluate whether the engagement is beneficial.
