Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Nobody Knows You’re Not a Dog
Q: And Jon, can you give us a little overview in this area?
Jon explains that S&T focuses on long-term, cross-cutting research in identity verification, spanning many agencies and involving standards bodies to enable interoperable, secure identity solutions.
The Front Line of Homeland Security
Q: How has the focus on drones and Counter-UAS evolved since your early days with NYPD?
Drones started as a niche concern but over a decade have become central to public safety and national security, driving long-term investment, cross-agency collaboration, and the development of a formal counter-UAS toolbox that supports operators while shaping policy and domestic manufacturing considerations.
The Front Line of Homeland Security
Q: So, what does NUSTL actually do for S&T on a day-to-day basis?
NUSTL tests and evaluates technologies for state and local first responders, conducts operational testing in realistic environments, gathers feedback from end users through focus groups and surveys, and uses those insights to inform procurements, vendor improvements, and policy discussions.
The Science and Human Impact of Chemical Threats
Q: So thinking again about, accidental chemical releases, what kind of modeling inputs or data do you feed into these models to understand how a release might progress?
We start with established baseline models for chlorine and other common chemicals, then compare those predictions with real-world observations from field tests and incidents; we continuously update the models with meteorological data, stockpile information, and proximity to populations to improve the accuracy and usefulness for first responders.
Good Chance You’re Going to Save Lives
Q: What advice do you have for someone that's interested in their career with first responder technologies?
Really listen to your customers. Understand it's not just the tech. It's you have to earn their trust.
