  • Mediocre host, great objective source of information

Great source of objective Covid-19 related information with great selection of guests such as Fauci. That being the case… I felt like the life was being sucked out of me with your introduction of Fauci in your newest episode. I didn’t realise there was a question in there 🤷🏻‍♀️😂 slow down, take a breath, make the question known. that’s all that’s required. Cheers for a great resource.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Declan Walsh, NYT Africa Correspondent: "It all boils down to two factors, conflict and gold."
Q: What is the status of international and local response coordination with US and other donors?
Walsh describes a split between US-led funding through NGOs and a separate WHO/Africa CDC incident management framework, creating coordination challenges but also bringing resources from multiple actors toward treatment and testing
Declan Walsh, NYT Africa Correspondent: "It all boils down to two factors, conflict and gold."
Q: How does conflict and the gold trade specifically affect outbreak dynamics in Ituri and Mongwalu?
He notes that conflict erodes trust in government, creates population displacement, and the gold economy attracts migrant workers and illicit actors, all of which complicate surveillance, hinder response coordination, and facilitate spread across borders.
Declan Walsh, NYT Africa Correspondent: "It all boils down to two factors, conflict and gold."
Q: Can you summarize the main factors that contributed to the delay in detecting and responding to the outbreak?
Walsh explains that the Bundibugyo strain lacked a readily available vaccine, local misidentification of symptoms as malaria or typhoid, and initial testing for the wrong strain all contributed to delays, compounded by a crippled health system and reduced epidemiological capacity on the ground.
Dr. Salim Abdool Karim, Chair, Africa CDC Emergency Consultative Group: "Congolese doctors know how to treat Ebola patients."
Q: Please walk us through your major observations and conclusions from your visit to Bunia and Kinshasa.
Salim describes the hospital triage process, the limitations of isolation wards, the need to bring rapid in-hospital diagnostics online, the crucial role of PPE, and the effectiveness of a coordinated, pillar-based plan under the IMT, with strong collaboration between Africa CDC and WHO.
Professor Paul Spiegel, Johns Hopkins University: the release of the Lancet Commission report on health, conflict and forced displacement
Q: What are the top four recommendations and how would they be implemented?
The four recommendations are: invert the power to localize leadership and establish an incident management system, end impunity with strengthened accountability across legal and organizational lines, fix the money by creating a global pooled funding mechanism outside the UN while maintaining where appropriate national and regional control, and uphold health for all by protecting essential services and prioritizing health workers and mental health; implementation would involve governance changes, consolidation of UN operations, and regionalized funding decisions.
