  • Great and informational

As a business owner and an inspector since 2019, I greatly appreciate the knowledge and the conversational approach to the inspection industry. I always get something from the pod and usually almost every time, I input something into my report or routine. I’m a better inspector because of it. I would love to hear about the business side more, but nonetheless I listen to every one.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Most furnaces have insufficient airflow (w/ Steve Rogers)
Q: What should inspectors tell homeowners about furnace filters and airflow?
Inspectors should emphasize that pressure drop across the filter matters more than the MIRV rating alone. Deeper filters (e.g., 4-inch deep) typically restrict airflow less than 1-inch filters with the same face area, and larger pleat surface area can dramatically reduce pressure drop. If a furnace is oversized for the house, even with a proper filter, the system may struggle to move air efficiently, causing short cycling or high-limit trips.
Most furnaces have insufficient airflow (w/ Steve Rogers)
Q: Got to ask you a question here, Steve. As home inspectors, we're not doing any type of this diagnostic stuff. What quick checks can we perform to gauge airflow without specialized equipment?
A practical first step is to measure the furnace's temperatures: look at the temperature rise from intake to exhaust and compare it to typical ranges (about 30-60 degrees). A high rise suggests low airflow; a low rise can indicate too much airflow or an oversized system. Also, observe whether the furnace tends to trip on the high-limit switch and correlate that with filtered air and duct size. For DIY contexts, check for filter depth and size, then estimate whether a standard 16x20 or similar filter could be undersized for the system; if unsure, recommend a qualified HVAC tech to perform a field test.
Building Fortified Homes (with Isaac Scott)
Q: What sets Clare Homes apart from other builders in Louisiana?
Clare Homes builds with a foundation in Energy Star and Fortified certifications, aims for zero-energy-ready capabilities on select projects, and emphasizes a continuous load path, sealed roof decks, and advanced wall assemblies to deliver resilient, high-performance homes.
How important is flashing? (with Eric Houseman)
Q: What do we do about kickout flashing when undersized or poorly installed?
We should document inadequate kickout flashing, discuss why it matters, and outline what the current standards would imply, while recognizing that practical enforcement may vary by construction context.
Private Equity buying up service companies: good or bad? (with Noah Gavic)
Q: What exactly isPE and how does it differ from public companies?
PE is private equity—investment groups that buy or roll up private companies and aim to improve efficiency, profitability, and exits, often through consolidation and systematization rather than being publicly traded.
