Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

EP114: Sarah Knapp (Sport Psychologist)
Q: Can you share a bit about your general approach as a sports psychologist?
The approach is highly individualized, starting with initial assessments and a needs analysis to form a case formulation. A core emphasis is helping athletes manage their emotions, using ACT as a preferred framework but remaining flexible and person-centered. If ACT isn't suitable, other supportive methods are used, including providing a listening space and empathy to help athletes discover their own solutions.
EP114: Sarah Knapp (Sport Psychologist)
Q: What is your understanding of performance under pressure and where does it come from for you?
Performance under pressure varies by person, but it often involves bringing your best self into the arena and performing consistently despite high stakes or external demands. It stems from a combination of formal training in sport psychology, varied applied experiences, and ongoing peer and supervisory conversations that shape how athletes respond to fear, mistakes, and expectations.
EP82: Jeremy Holt (Organisational Psychologist)
Q: Why is social identity leadership important for adolescents?
Adolescence is a period where the balance between differentiation and belonging is critical; a strong social identity helps youths navigate transitions, learn group norms, and find meaning in belonging.
EP82: Jeremy Holt (Organisational Psychologist)
Q: How would you define social identity leadership?
Leadership is an attribution—followers decide who leads based on shared beliefs, belonging, and the sense of us within the group, rather than merely possessing personal leadership traits.
EP82: Jeremy Holt (Organisational Psychologist)
Q: What does performing under pressure mean to you?
It means being able to perform when anxious by managing the context and focusing on the task, with the level of anxiety and its impact depending on the surrounding social environment.
