  • Fabulous information and advice

Well what can I say. I’ve just tuned in to a podcast, I have been meaning to do this since our son started at Bridgeway. Such a lovely informative listen and even though our son already at the S.E.N school I learnt something new.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Sensory Plate: Helping SEN Children with Fussy Eating
Q: If a child is extremely limited in diet, when should parents seek professional help?
Parents should consider professional help when growth is affected or there are physical reactions like gagging or vomiting; guidance includes pursuing GP referrals and noting that NHS wait times may apply, with private options available in the meantime.
The Sensory Plate: Helping SEN Children with Fussy Eating
Q: What practical strategies can parents use to gently support a child who struggles with certain textures or smells?
Strategies include increasing exposure without pressure, getting children involved in cooking and shopping, presenting a variety of foods on the table, and acknowledging that family mealtimes may look different for each child and that adaptation is essential for progress.
The Sensory Plate: Helping SEN Children with Fussy Eating
Q: Can you explain fussy, selective eating or sensory driven eating and why it's so common in SEN children?
Keira describes it as a spectrum where sensory processing issues influence food preferences and tolerance, noting that neurodiverse children often experience higher prevalence of extreme reactions to textures or textures, leading to a wider range of picky eating behaviors that require tailored approaches.
The Sensory Plate: Helping SEN Children with Fussy Eating
Q: Tell us a bit about you, who you are, what made you start My Fussy Eater, how you started that channel.
Keira explains she began sharing her experiences after realizing the lack of relatable, practical advice for parents dealing with early fussy eating, especially when a child's sensitivity extends into the SEN realm; she started a website and social channels in 2014 to fill that gap and gradually built a community around practical tips.
Supporting Children With AuDHD
Q: What strategies or resources would you recommend for parents on managing the whole family needs at home with ODHD?
Annie describes creating an inclusive family culture, using practical tools like diary sheets to track daily triggers and responses, and emphasizing clear, simple communication to help every family member feel seen and supported. She also highlights the importance of visual supports and emotional well-being grids to map out what helps each person on different days, ensuring a calm, predictable environment.
