  • Infuriated by thoughtless spoiler

I listened to the episode on 28 years later :The Bone Temple. Edith gave away a massive spoiler about the end of the film. It was obvious what and whom she was referring to. Totally spoiled it. Very disappointed 👎

  • Good Show!

Good show, a lot of great research and good questions. Edith is a good interviewer but often gets in the way of the answers with hysterical laughter, often for seemingly no reason except for too much coffee perhaps. I could also do without the long intros prior to cutting to the guests, get on with it!

  • Not enough about soundtracks

What started out as a very interesting podcast about film and television soundtracks has shifted to more general star and director interviews.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

602: Richard Gadd On New Series, Half Man
Q: What's your stance on needle drops and licensing, and how do you balance iconic songs with the budget and clearance realities?
It can be painful when a song you're attached to is unavailable due to clearance costs, but the process is essential for honoring a moment and enriching the character's emotional arc; we explore many tracks that ultimately didn't clear.
602: Richard Gadd On New Series, Half Man
Q: When you write and direct, what's your musical approach? Do you have clear ideas about the score and needle drops given the two timelines, or does it come from emotion and narrative?
We had extensive discussions about the musical language, aiming for a brother's theme that evolves across the series; the composers were very collaborative, and their work usually finds the moment that the scene needs, sometimes in surprising ways.
602: Richard Gadd On New Series, Half Man
Q: What was the starting point for this for you, Richard, in terms of wanting to tell the story? Am I right in thinking it was even before Baby Reindeer, you started this?
The idea began around 2019, influenced by conversations about broken masculinity, and I envisioned two broken men whose backstory is revealed through flashbacks, driving the motivation and structure for the project.
596: Charlotte Regan & Composer Patrick Jonsson On The Music Of Mint
Q: What were the start of conversations in terms of the role of music, both score and needle drops, and the opening theme?
The conversation began with establishing Shannon's perspective as the grounding through which music is approached, then expanding to include a love theme as a narrative anchor. They experimented with numerous versions for the opening track before settling on a track that felt right emotionally and culturally, recognizing that needle drops and score should work together to support character and story rather than compete.
595: 'Sonny' Lee Sung Jin On The Music Of Beef
Q: So great. Music is a big part of your creative process by the sounds of it, in terms of making playlists whilst you're writing. How does that help?
Sonny explains that growing up in a musical family shaped his approach to storytelling through music, and that chord progressions map onto narrative beats, guiding how score and needle drops intersect with character arcs.
