As a LTL, it seems the spark has been lost in the move from the BBC - the films reviews now seem to be something to have get out of the way for more ‘wittertainment’. Hopefully they’ll fine the balance right as they go on (and a better editor?! The show seems to jump around at times almost incoherently). The ads to content ratio also seems rather skewed. But for now, it’s… fine.
The flagship film show crew is all here, but addled with advertising commercials that just break up the format the old show had enough that I’m not sure how long I’ll listen. The BBC version felt concise with listener letters, the top 10, film reviews and wittering. Now it’s all moved around and I feel taken out of the experience. Long term listener and was hopeful the move to a new format would redress the recent slide into onanistic chat and sycophantic correspondence. Kermode and Mayo (on the) take seems more concerned about promoting the content you can pay extra for, than actually delivering anything close to a film review podcast. In fact the film reviews seem to be a burden for them both. They seem more content pretending they know what a VPN is than engaging in interesting discussions about the latest releases.
I have missed Kermode and Mayo and have been eagerly awaiting their reincarnation. But after several episodes I have concluded…it’s just not as good. Too many ads, and without the BBC framing (news breaks, things that can’t be said etc) it lacks the pacing it had before. Feels long and rambling and indulgent but not in a good way. The terrible scripted jokes worked when they’d built up as part of dvd of the week feature, but now they just feel contrived and flat. Such a shame, but don’t think I’... more
