  • Need a firmer producer

As much as I love the podcast, the meandering tangents really spoil it for me. Was really looking forward to the Project Hail Mary episode and Mark talked more about Silent Running than PHM. The same with ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER. It was barely mentioned.

  • Eyes Wide Shut

Couldn’t agree more. I remember the sense of disappointment I felt when I saw this. Seems that Kubrick could handle big themes magnificently but when it comes down to the personal he flunked it.

Relieved that the wierd bit in the fancy dress shop wasn’t just me.

I think that because he directed Strangelove we think he was great at comedy. Clearly Sellers and Southern were supplying that while Kubrick had the sense to get out of the way. These odd moments like the above, and doctor and nurse scen... more

  • Oy the ads

Love the conversations, but to have not just sentences interrupted by ads but sometimes they start in the middle of a word, is just so jarring. I understand the need for ads but can you at least edit them in at a natural break in the conversation?

  • Excruciating

Sorry to say that I have gone right off this podcast. The last episode about the BAFTAs is actually a nauseating back and forth between the hosts, lots of false modesty and ego massage. There is nothing relevant or insightful or really interesting that emanates from these conversations. It’s quite tedious. Such a shame as I am a fan of Mark.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Samira Ahmed on A Hard Day's Night, Leisa Gwenllian and Marc Evans on Effi o Blaenau
Q: Tell me first about the experience of writing the book-length study of A Hard Day's Night.
Samira Ahmed explains that her long engagement with the film came from repeatedly watching it with family and realizing there was a substantial analysis to be written, which she accomplished with careful research and a clear aim to illuminate both its historical context and its enduring appeal.
Bob Odenkirk and Ben Wheatley on NORMAL
Q: How did your experiences with Nobody inform your approach to the action and the visual storytelling in Normal?
The Nobody films provided a blueprint for blending genre excitement with character-driven drama, and I carried that sensibility into Normal by grounding spectacle in genuine emotion and personal stakes.
Bob Odenkirk and Ben Wheatley on NORMAL
Q: What was it like collaborating with Ben Wheatley, and how did you shape the film's tone and action sequences?
Ben knows what he wants and loves making things blow up, but he also respects character, so we worked to balance high-energy set pieces with authentic character moments, often editing in-camera to preserve momentum.
Bob Odenkirk and Ben Wheatley on NORMAL
Q: How did you approach shifting from sketched comedy to a hard-edged action thriller like Nobody and then Normal?
I focused on maintaining a relatable, grounded core for the character while expanding the world around him with bigger, more kinetic action—while ensuring the emotional stakes stayed front and center.
Jack O'Connell on 28 YEARS LATER: THE BONE TEMPLE & SINNERS plus Ben Wheatley on BULK
Q: Do you think that coming into it through that kind of freedom has set you in good stead for the rest of your career?
For sure, yeah. I mean, Shane was my first film, and that style of filmmaking was my introduction into the business.
