  • Accessible, Informative, Practical

Thank you for making this excellent, research-based learning opportunity that is both extremely accessible and affordable. This is the best kind of PD: it’s 1 hour at a time so that I can learn and then have time to synthesize and apply; it provides information I can apply to my practice immediately; and I can listen and learn while I drive, fold laundry, etc. Thanks for the research and resources!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Re-Defining Effective Communication with Black, Disabled AAE-Speaking Children
Q: You were both a participant and a researcher. What was that experience like and how did it influence the study?
Privet describes embracing her dual role, prioritizing authenticity and reflexivity, shifting from a clinical gaze to a more radical, critical lens, and reorienting the data to foreground the children's lived experiences and community voices.
Re-Defining Effective Communication with Black, Disabled AAE-Speaking Children
Q: What did you find in this study?
The study revealed rich, relational interactions among Black, disabled, AAE-speaking preschoolers, with an emphasis on repair and negotiation as genuine, culturally grounded forms of communication, rather than deficits highlighted by standard assessments.
Re-Defining Effective Communication with Black, Disabled AAE-Speaking Children
Q: Can you elaborate on that a little bit, especially through the lens of affirming Black disabled children's experiences?
The social model critiques are nuanced; Privet explains three main critiques: that it sometimes morphs oppression into 'special needs' language, that rights-based approaches can marginalize those with multiple identities, and that separating disability from impairment can disembed our understanding of bodies, thus emphasizing the need for a more integrated, relational approach.
Chewing as Therapy: Rethinking Oral Preparation and Textures in Dysphagia
Q: What resources are available for clinicians to learn more about these concepts?
Savorease.com provides professional references and PDFs; ASHA Foundation materials; recent webinars and academic papers on tribology, IDDSI, and functional textures, plus ongoing updates in the SLP Nerdcast show notes.
Chewing as Therapy: Rethinking Oral Preparation and Textures in Dysphagia
Q: How can clinicians practically apply this paradigm shift in everyday practice?
Incorporate functional textures that provide early tactile stimulation, test transitional foods that dissolve to target textures, and collaborate across disciplines (dentistry, prosthodontics, nutrition) to tailor safer yet engaging texture options for rehabilitation.
