Skylines is the podcast from the New Statesman's urbanism site. Every two weeks, Jonn Elledge, colleagues and guests discuss the politics & workings of cities and test their contention that maps are a great topic for radio.

Casablanca is 102 minutes long. Citizen Kane runs for 119. This, the 150th and final episode of Skylines, the CityMetric podcast, is longer than either, at 124. You lucky, lucky people.
I’ve loved doing this show over the last four and a bit years –... more
Partly because of the crisis, partly for reasons we’ll come to in a moment, our production schedule on Skylines has got a bit lax. So the first of this week’s interviews – with my pal Claire Cocks in Palermo, about what lockdown, Italian-flavour, loo... more
I’m still locked down, and so, I assume, are you, so this week’s show is a game of two-halves.
In the present, I speak to my lockdown companion, my partner Agnes Frimston – who, as it happens, co-hosts the newly weekly Chatham House podcast Undercur... more
Apologies for the fact this week’s podcast is a little bit late. But in my defence, both time and the calendar have lost all meaning.
Anyway. Something like a third of the world is currently in lockdown to deal with the coronavirus crisis, including... more
The mayoral walks mini-series began in an act of trolling. Rory Stewart launched his campaign to be mayor of London through the unusual strategy of walking all over London and tweeting about it; I have spent large chunks of my life walking all over L... more
In all the excitement over the London mayoral election, and Brexit, and coronavirus, and the end of civilisation as we know it, it might have escaped you that there are mayoral elections due in other English cities in early May. So, on this week’s po... more
This week, it’s the second in our mayoral walks mini-series.
Sian Berry is the co-leader of the Green party, a member of the London Assembly, and is currently running as the party’s candidate to be mayor of the capital for the third time. A few wee... more
In just over three months, England goes to the polls, again, for local elections. This time round the big story, at least so far as we’re concerned, will be the mayoral elections in London, Greater Manchester, the West Midlands and various other citi... more
I really enjoy this - in particular as someone living in London who is interested in urbanism. Sounds like Jonn is leaving it though which will be a shame.
Great to hear from a journalist who's interested in the same things I am. Always interesting, thoughtful and funny with it. Really enjoyed the recent one about my adopted home town, the great Newcatle upon Tyne. Nice one Jonn!
Excellent podcast on urban themes, with a lot for train nerds (obviously by far the most civilized mode of transport).
Jonn Elledge once described the platonic ideal of the podcast as him apologising for the poor sound quality of an interview, but the interviews tend to be so interesting that it doesn't really matter. Well worth your time.
Excellent, very enjoyable chat with the lads.
More sweary Manavis please.
Get enthused by cities, more depressed by Brexit.
Interesting stuff on cities and John Elledge’s Twitter beefs
I started listening to this podcast a year ago, around the time when I moved to London. Since then this podcast has provided me with never-ending facts to impressively regurgitate in conversation, intensified my desire to live in cities for the rest of my life and inexplicably made me a massive transport nerd. Safe to say, I'm a fan. One comment though- Jonn Elledge's self deprecating 'i am a complete loser who loves maps and walking across London, lol' schtick gets a bit tired on occasion. OWN... more
I look forward to listening to Skylines every week, and am digging into the back catalogue now. I find the deep dives into urbanism, politics, and policy to be very interesting and I always learn something new. Plus, I'm a dork for public transport. And I love how genuinely funny the commentary and discussions can be, and the sillier episodes are some of my favorites.
Skylines is very insightful and interesting, bringing together thoughtful ideas on public policy and transit, with an array of guests who help flesh out the larger picture of how transit fits into our daily life and the political landscape. As an expat, it's terrific for me to keep informed on key issues and topics back home in an enjoyable and engaging format. But while the focus is often specific, local issues in the UK, the podcast frequently disucsses broader, global topics, and really teach... more
Really interesting podcast, in general the show is quite UK/London centric but does get quite a few guests on from other parts of the world.
knowledge of hosts and guests is very good although I miss when John had a co-host.
The best episode so far has been about the legacy of the Olympics in cities.
I think anyone who has an interest in cities will enjoy this podcast.
It's been almost 30 episodes since my first review (Oct 20, 2016) and I'm happy to report the audio quality that plagued early episodes has improved greatly.
The content in general has remained about the same - recommend for those interested in transit, public policy, urbanism, the built environment, infrastructure, U.K. politics, etc
One of very few British podcasts that covers urbanism; good concept, good episode themes, so I keep listening in hope that it will improve. I wish there was more factual information and less extemporising. Liked the discussions about the metro mayors, and the Chicago one. But a lot of episodes are really flabby. The London Underground episode (#33) was a wasted opportunity as were John's Midwestern road trips. And why haven't you mentioned HS2 once in the whole series? Can I hope you're planning... more
Consistently interesting and entertaining. The presenters' and guests' enthusiasm and knowledge makes even the most obscure detail of city life accessible and fascinating. Makes you look at a city through new eyes.
