I listen to a lot of history podcasts, but this is one of the main ones where I never miss an episode. There is intellectual rigour combined with Gareth Russell’s superb storytelling. This means you get all the facts but also the human stories. Russell is never deliberately over emotional but his natural warmth and compassion shine through. If you can get through the episodes about the Titanic without at least a lump in your throat, you have a harder heart than me.

I just finished listening to Gareth’s superb podcast about the Czar and his family. Just following the chaotic last few years of the Romanovs rule, the political infighting, an unpopular war, and even food shortages caused by severe climate had me sitting on the edge of my seat. Knowing the sad fate of the royal family I was nonetheless surprised that they were not aware of how dangerous the situation had become.
