  • I understand you need to monetize the podcast, and I respect that.

But lately the balance feels way off — it honestly sounds like 70% ads and only 30% real content. The constant and lengthy ad segments are overwhelming and make it hard to stay engaged.

I’m saying this as someone who genuinely enjoys the show. But if this doesn’t change and the ad load stays this heavy, I’ll probably stop listening.

  • Good content, annoying ads

Great quick tips. But like 50% of the entire thing is ads. Super disappointing money grab :(

  • Too many ads

It could be way better if they didn’t have that many ads on very short episodes.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep. 3392 - Q&A: “Should I use Etsy's platform or build my own website?”
Q: I've just opened an Etsy shop monogramming blankets, throws and scarves. I would like to have my own website too. Etsy offers a website platform called Pattern. Is it better to use Pattern or something totally outside of Etsy?
Chris explains that these easy-to-use templated platforms are popular for their convenience and that, for many small businesses, the benefit often outweighs the desire for total customization. He suggests trying a platform like Pattern or similar builders, noting that they usually offer a short trial and the option to export data later if you want to switch, making it a low-risk step before moving to a fully custom site if needed.
Ep. 3395 - Q&A: “My crazy idea to launch a new magazine…”
Q: What is your take on starting a print-only magazine with a focus on advertising and business from the 1930s to the 1940s, and how should I validate the idea?
The host advises researching comparable indie print magazines to learn about subscriber models, distribution, and original vision, and suggests assessing whether a niche audience exists and if the market can sustain a print publication before committing resources.
Ep. 3391 - Q&A: “Should I quit my job when the economy is bad?”
Q: And so basically, this listener wants to know, like with an uncertain economy or a downturn in the economy, is this the right time to quit my job?
The host suggests evaluating the specifics of the business idea, testing viability, and aiming to build dependence away from the employer rather than making an all-or-nothing leap; focus on sustainable income and daily actions to increase security.
Ep. 3385 - Q&A: “What if a company hires you and doesn’t pay up??”
Q: Hi Chris, this is Justin from Nashville. I just started listening to the show recently after finding it on Spotify. A friend of mine did some work for a company and didn't get paid. In retrospect, it seems like they took advantage of her, but she didn't have a clear contract and only had verbal authorization from one person who's no longer at the company. I wanna start offering design services to startups, and naturally, I like to avoid the situation. I also don't want to spend a lot of time chasing down invoices. However, is there any way to protect myself and keep things simple for everyone involved?
Yes. Start with a written contract or at least a clear email authorization, insist on a deposit (about 50%) before beginning work, and set up an invoicing system that sends automatic reminders. Use written terms to define scope and payment timelines, and consider using upfront deposits and milestone-based invoicing to reduce friction and ensure you're paid promptly for completed work.
Ep. 3381 - Q&A: “Driving an RV across the country—can I get sponsored?”
Q: Do you know any companies interested in sponsoring something like this?
The host explains that sponsorship is more viable if the traveler has an existing audience or a clear, relevant angle for sponsors, and suggests building momentum and a mission before pitching.
