על בעל התשובה להתנהג בכניעות גם בלב וגם במעשה, גם מול חבריו וגם מול הקב"ה. כדי לעקור את שורש החטאים שהוא המידות המגונות, וכי כך ראוי לעבוד את ה', מתוך ענווה.
על החוזר בתשובה להרגיש מלא בושה וכלימה בעקבות חטאיו, הבושה נובעת ממספר מרכיבים - הבנת האדם את מעלתו, הבנת חומרת החטא והפנמת העמידה לפני ה'. אם אדם יפנים את שלושת המרכיבים הללו הוא יתבייש בחטאו החמור שלא מתאים למעלתו, ועוד כשה' רואה אותו.
