  • Some good guests but …

There are some good guests on this show but it often seems to miss the big picture. The discussion of the Iran War was extremely naive and somehow missed the likelihood that Iran would stop traffic in the Persian Gulf, or what it would means if Israel was associated, whether fairly or not, with bringing the U.S. into a war unpopular with the U.S. public. The treatment of Netanyahu is generally fawning and ignores how he has undermined Israeli democracy.

  • Beat the drums

This Jew finds no tikva here, neither for diaspora nor Israel nor for a remoralized Judaism. The pious self-congratulation and absence of critical reflection -- celebrating "the glories of Western civilization" -- fits 2026 well but represents Jewish intellectual and ethical tradition poorly

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Mike Pence and Eric Cohen on What It Means to Be Endowed with Natural Rights
Q: What would your most important piece of advice be to a young Christian looking to get into politics? How can we balance the political world while sticking to the principles of our faith?
Pence emphasizes that adversity reveals character, not creates it, and urges young people to cultivate integrity, maintain faith with public service, and let their commitments guide their actions rather than merely seeking power. He also shares his personal journey of faith and public service as a model for balancing conviction with pragmatic leadership.
Michael Doran and Hussein Aboubakr Mansour on Power, Ideology, and Understanding the Middle East
Q: Okay, so Mike, when you write analysis of the region, what I see you looking at are relative military capabilities, states, policy, history. Make the case without hedging, why is that the right way to look at the region?
Power calculations and gravity as the governing force explain behavior; but he acknowledges that ideology and narrative are not irrelevant—they just don't directly replace the power calculus for predicting actions.
David Arnovitz on the Tanakh of the Land of Israel
Q: What is the principle behind the Selection process for the volumes, and how do you choose which scholars to include?
The project uses a large academic editing team led by Jeremiah Unterman; manuscripts are drafted from main Near East commentaries, then scholars are recruited based on relevance to the specific book, with attention to balancing accessibility for general readers and scholarly rigor.
Ryan McBeth on Why the U.S. Doesn't (Yet) Have a Munitions Crisis
Q: When the commander knows interceptor stocks are running low and resupply is years away, what changes about how the warfighter fights?
The warfighter does not fundamentally change the aim; instead, they re-prioritize targets, accept higher risk, and potentially rely on alternative tactics like gun raids or artillery reconfiguration to compensate for limited stocks, all guided by ongoing risk calculations and the commander's intent.
Ryan McBeth on Why the U.S. Doesn't (Yet) Have a Munitions Crisis
Q: Let me ask you to bring us inside the military's planning. If you're fighting counterinsurgency in the deserts and towns of Iraq and Afghanistan versus thinking about major conventional threats, how does that change prioritization and investments?
The guest emphasizes that coin and readiness are split by the type of threat; counterinsurgency favored manpower, reconstruction, and stand-up of government while large-scale warfare requires attrition-focused, high-end capabilities. He notes the shift toward lighter, more mobile forces and the need to preserve production lines for conventional weapons, while also integrating new private-sector innovations to complement traditional arms.
