  • Yes…just…yes!

There’s history, there’s lore, there’s research told by someone you can listen to without wanting to put a screwdriver in your ear! Lol I bet he spells everything correctly as well! Love this. I grew up on Lake Erie and our baby was the Niagara. I’m sure he’s working on that fascinating story since I’ve been singing her praises! Thanx for making my job as a trucker a little easier! These really help pass the time and I love ships!

I had the misfortune to start with this episode. The female narrator is just awful. She can barely read any sentence longer than 7 words. I’ll try it again, but starting out it’s good info and amateurish presentation.

  • Glad I stumbled on this one!

Unsure of what to expect… I’ve been blown away. Research for the episodes are superb. perfect “podcaster voice” that’s smooth and easy to listen to. The story telling is vivid and detailed. I am always looking forward to a new episode.. especially the longer ones covering old historical wrecks/disasters.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Wreck of the Mentor w/Eric Jay Dolin
Q: How did you approach gathering primary sources to support theMentor story?
He used two direct accounts from crew members, a captain's transcript found in a museum archive, newspapers from multiple regions, and Palauan oral histories to triangulate and present a well-rounded account.
The Wreck of the Mentor w/Eric Jay Dolin
Q: But what exactly did you mean by that idea that history isn't the only one possible interpretation of events?
Dolin explains that history relies on interpretation as much as fact, with different historians highlighting various aspects yet arriving at recognizable narratives, and that humility is essential when evaluating gaps in sources.
Based on a True Story: The Terror & Franklin Expedition
Q: Was it normal for explorers to go two to three years without news during that era?
Yes, longer gaps between communications were common due to the remoteness and lack of reliable transport; expeditions often did not return within the expected time frames, leading to delayed or uncertain communications.
The Stargazer of Nantucket w/Julie Gerstenblatt
Q: But what was the original inspiration, the historical inspiration behind the fictional Starbuck family, and their Clippership, The Stargazer?
Gerstenblatt explains her inspiration came from Nantucket's whaling heritage, the Starbuck family legacy, and the real-world clipper ship era, weaving together historical figures like Donald McKay and the Flying Cloud to ground her fictional Stargazer in authentic maritime history.
The Stargazer of Nantucket w/Julie Gerstenblatt
Q: Could you give a quick synopsis of the story without giving away too much?
The Stargazer of Nantucket follows a husband-and-wife merchant-captain team aboard a clipper on a perilous journey from Nantucket to China and to California in the Gold Rush era, focusing on their family dynamics, the dangers of the sea, and the competitive race to bring back lucrative goods.
