  • Why separate features??

    Hello,

Please play as one continuous show as in the present format I can’t listen while out walking or driving due the current format of several separate features. It’s my favourite programme on radio but often missed because of the ‘bitty’ podcast presentation.

Tom O'Brien: The Cork Native Powering Ireland's Fuel Sector
Q: But I want to go back to the start first, and your own story. You were born in Cork.
Tom describes his Cork roots, time in Dublin, and how he studied at UCC, before moving into law and later energy, framing his career path in context of Ireland's evolving energy sector.
Hoarding Goes Global
Q: What kinds of things are countries hoarding now and why does it matter for policy?
Dr. Howard explains that oil and fertilisers are central to current stockpiling, with fertiliser being critical for food production and oil for energy and industrial inputs; governments are considering reserves, export controls, and more domestic production to mitigate shocks, while still balancing commitments to decarbonisation and open trade.
The Latest Developments from the Fuel Protests
Q: Kevin, what is the situation with the number of forecourts around the country that are out of fuel this morning?
About 600 forecourts are reported out of stock, up from around 500 the previous evening; the shortages are spreading as customers encounter long lines and regions are hit differently, creating a 'whack-a-mole' scenario where supply reaches some stations but not others.
The Tween Beauty Industry
Q: Do you think this could be the beginning of a big shift or even a watershed moment for the beauty industry?
Yes, it could be a watershed moment as regulators push back against covert tactics targeting young people, prompting brands to rethink how they market and the ethical implications of reaching children through social media and influencers.
How the World is Responding to the Energy Crisis
Q: Should governments implement caps or other price controls to manage an energy crisis?
Experts argue against price caps because they place the cost on taxpayers or suppliers and may reduce the incentive to invest in energy infrastructure, instead favoring demand reduction and efficiency measures.
