Don’t bother breaking it up but good job and start telling us about secret payments

    I’d like an Irish version.

Why bother breaking it to segments. No need

  • Lots of Mixups

I've been subscribed for quite a while but there are constant Mixups lately where music and talk shows are uploaded to this podcast instead of the applicable news segments.

  • Good

My only complaints are that I'd prefer it to focus more on international and economic news and less on local stories, and that there often seem to be practical issues with it such as parts of the show left out and ads left in.

I wish RTÉ would put out Nuacht ag a Sé and the audio from the tv news as podcasts too.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Police in the north have issued a high court apology to the family of a man murdered by loyalists in 1998
Q: Thank you very much for joining us this afternoon. It's a very long time since Fergal was murdered. What can you tell us about today's settlement?
The settlement was announced at the High Court, is significant, and while the PSNI did not admit liability, there was an acknowledgement of shortcomings in the investigation, and the family is hopeful for ongoing truth-seeking efforts.
Rise of fertiliser costs as ingredients trapped in the Strait of Hormuz
Q: Tony, tell us about the problem and about the possible solutions.
The guest explains the scale of the disruption, noting that roughly one third of ammonia and urea supplies pass through the Strait of Hormuz, which is pushing up prices and limiting availability. He outlines EU considerations like cushioning the impact through the CBAM framework, exploring bio-based fertilizers, and, crucially, potential direct subsidies or funding to farmers as immediate relief while Europe debates reducing reliance on imported fertilizer.
Warning about the danger of another rise in the price of food
Q: Is it inevitable that food prices will go up further given the energy shock?
The guest argues that an energy price shock from the Iran situation will likely push up costs, especially diesel for farming and transport, leading to higher prices at the supermarket, with some foods more exposed due to perishability and transport share.
Two reports highlight failings in the care of children known to the child protection services
Q: Just briefly on this, reading the report this morning, it sounds as though you had some difficulty getting the cooperation of CAMS, and that staff didn't take part in the review. Can you explain what happened?
Two CAMS services were involved; one service cooperated and provided access to psychiatrists and records, while the other community-based service did not participate in interviews but did send records, contributing to an incomplete but still informative view of the case. This underscored challenges in inter-service cooperation and data access during reviews.
Two reports highlight failings in the care of children known to the child protection services
Q: Tell us first of all, if you would, about Alana, who was known to Tusla and was placed in the care of, I think, extended family. What happened to her?
Alana was placed with relatives under a private arrangement that later became a formal foster care placement. The review found a light-touch approach to assessment, with the male carer having a past alcohol problem that had not been properly managed, and the sexual assault occurred while the carer was intoxicated. This highlighted gaps in oversight and the need for stricter adherence to care regulations and lead responsibilities.
