  • Great series but fractured podcast

5/5 for the program but podcast is unfortunately broken into several parts making it awkward to playback. The entire program minus the ads with time stamps added is how everyone else does it.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

On The Trail Of Cuskinny’s Kingfishers
Q: How do kingfishers approach nesting and defend their territory when a predator is nearby?
Kingfishers excavate tunnels and multiple nesting sites, protecting the main chamber while having nearby alternative nests; if a predator gets one site, they can relocate and continue nesting elsewhere, which demonstrates their resilience and adaptive nesting strategy.
On The Trail Of Cuskinny’s Kingfishers
Q: What signals the start of breeding season for kingfishers in this coastal area?
Breeding season begins as kingfishers start preparing to breed, typically moving from coastal perches to nearby rivers where nesting sites are established, with eggs usually laid mid-April and incubation taking about 20 days.
Dublin’s Rare Surviving Elms Offer New Hope Against Dutch Elm Disease
Q: Are there any elm species that show resilience or tolerance to the disease?
Yes, witch elms show natural resistance or tolerance, and isolated trees often survive longer; hybrids and cross-breeding with Asian and European elms may confer tolerance, though no trees are truly immune.
Dublin’s Rare Surviving Elms Offer New Hope Against Dutch Elm Disease
Q: What exactly was Dutch Elm Disease and how did it spread to Ireland?
It started in Asia, moved through Europe via trade and movement of timber, and in the 1960s reached Britain where it spread to Ireland; the disease is a wilt caused by a fungus carried by bark beetles, which blocks the tree's xylem and leads to death.
Keeping Track Of Ireland’s Squirrels And Pine Martens... And You Can Help!
Q: Is this citizen science worthwhile beyond publicity?
Yes, the program educates the public, engages them in mapping wildlife, and provides valuable data for modeling populations and understanding predator-prey dynamics.
