  • Amazing and important podcast

This is a great podcast. Standford manges to make what could be a dry topic super intersting, informative and easy to listen to., And more importantly, this is an important topic and his great interviews really bring out the science and history as well as the human element in this sometimes very difficult science of river and sedimentation. Highly recommend to anyone with an interst in tis topic. Sounds like it miught be boring but its not. I wish the Corps would do podcasts like this on their ... more

  • The best river mechanics podcast!

So much wisdom and insight that is not always openly available. For me, these podcasts provide new perspectives and makes me ask more informed and important questions. As a junior scientist, I am thankful for these podcasts. Stanford, great job! You set the stage by asking good, meaningful questions that you are able to eloquently sum and explain. I’m looking forward to a podcast with you as the interviewee!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

David Topping on the Grand Canyon Prototype Experiments, Disequilibrium Transport, and Hysteresis
Q: How did you get interested in rivers?
David mentions growing up playing in sand and water, along with guidance from an enthusiastic undergraduate advisor.
Mary Power on River Ecology, Disturbance, and Inverted Pyramids
Q: What takeaway lessons do you think would be really helpful to people who are in river restoration?
Whenever possible, make it passive. Provide enough sediment supply and enough water supply for the river to do what it is meant to do in that area.
Mary Power on River Ecology, Disturbance, and Inverted Pyramids
Q: What is the Angelo Coastal Range Reserve?
The Angelo Coastal Range Reserve is a protected area co-managed with the UC Natural Reserve System, encompassing over 8,000 acres and focuses on preserving natural landscapes while allowing for scientific research.
Peter Wilcock on Gravel Bed Rivers, Partial Transport, Armor Layer Persistence and Channel Design (Plus Wilcock & Crowe)
Q: What is partial transport?
Partial transport means that some of the grains that were on the bed surface before an event are still there after the event, indicating a complex relationship between flow conditions and sediment mobility.
Peter Wilcock on Gravel Bed Rivers, Partial Transport, Armor Layer Persistence and Channel Design (Plus Wilcock & Crowe)
Q: Peter, how did you get interested in river processes?
It was a lengthy and backwards process, starting from a lack of interest in college to being fascinated by physical geography and sediment transport.
