  • A thoroughly repulsive host

Although I would normally appreciate the subject matter here, the host is so fake and repulsive that I find it difficult to listen to her.

I’ve never met someone with an English background who expresses themselves in such an odious and phony manner. Her accent is both snooty 20s mixed with an Elizabeth Holmes-like over-correction. She over-empathizes words in an obnoxious way and has a false and huffy enthusiasm. (Even Sebastian Gorka’s fake accent is more melodious.)

  • Okay

Interesting interviewees rather spoiled by constant and lengthy interruptions which make it impossible to follow the person’s train of thought or argument. These types of interviews work best when the interviewer is riffing a bit off the other person and really responding to them, rather than shouting at them.

  • An expert’s show

Very deep and penetrating questions. Takes guests beyond their comfort zone. It might feel quite intense for an amateur without experience with economics. But this is amazing for experts (or those like me who pretend to be experts…)

  • Hard to focus on content

Very difficult to concentrate on what are usually very interesting podcast topics due to affected accent and odd speech inflection. Shame!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

What caused the Islamic Revival? Professor Jared Rubin
Q: What would the Islamic world look like if Saudi Arabia did not have any oil wealth?
It's likely that the Middle East would be even further behind economically without oil wealth, and European interest in the region would have lessened, affecting its development.
What caused the Islamic Revival? Professor Jared Rubin
Q: Since 2017, have you revised any of your priors?
The focus has shifted slightly towards understanding the broader political economy equilibrium rather than dismissing religious influences outright, especially regarding the printing press.
"Raised to Obey": Agustina Paglayan
Q: What does that timing analysis tell us about the contending theories like democratization, industrialization?
These theories are very limited in explaining why the Western world led the creation and expansion of public primary education.
"Raised to Obey": Agustina Paglayan
Q: Can you talk me through the quantitative work you do in trying to unpick those different possible explanations?
I compare the timing of public primary education laws with the timing of major historical events like the spread of democracy and industrialization.
Hostile Sexism in South Korea: Professor Jouen Kim
Q: What do you think could be done about this?
There needs to be an understanding that hostile sexism is tied to perceptions of downward mobility and economic pressures.
