I began my parenting journey in NZ as I am a Kiwi - back then I’de listen on a radio to this show. Having lived in Aus for over 10 years now though I find I keep coming back to this via poadcast. So thankful I can continue to listen, and I just love Kathryn, her interviews. So much insight, wisdom and guidance in the parenting journey 🙏 also some comfort in hearing kiwi accents I think haha

The two wildly different sides of a child's brain (and how to parent both)
Q: How would you describe the practical steps for a parent dealing with a meltdown to prevent long-term escalation?
Start by stopping the normal reactive patterns, avoid over-engaging, acknowledge the guard dog behavior, and then with the child calm, guide toward the true self using three boundaries (stop, no, go) and gradual, supportive movement toward a cooperative resolution.

Q: What were the recurring challenges you saw across time and across families that led to this book?
Mary explains that families were often following various theoretical approaches without sustainable results, leading to frustration as they hit a wall; the key insight was differentiating the child's true self from the guard dog defense system and addressing that dynamic directly.
How to help kids adjust to changes to the education system
Q: How do counselors fit into this process and when should families consider seeking additional support?
Counselors play a key role in maintaining well-being, addressing learning or emotional needs early, and helping families access targeted supports when necessary.
How to help kids adjust to changes to the education system

How to help kids adjust to changes to the education system
Q: Let's talk about whether it's primary or high school, and how much kids need to know about changes at different ages.
