Jim’s program is the only thing I listen to on National radio. It feels like he still talks to the average New Zealander. His interview style is exceptional and he doesn’t seem to think he needs to score personal points but focuses on getting information people want to know about.

  • Best listening of the week!

Jim is a fantastic interviewer. I only regret that he moved from afternoons and we can’t hear him 5 times a week.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Marc Wilson: The Idaho Murders
Q: How do you distinguish between serial, spree, and mass killings in terms of psychological drivers?
Serial killers tend to show a stronger need for control and power, mass killings relate to explosive rage and non-romantic grudges, and spree killings sit somewhere in between with intense emotional triggers and less opportunity control, but all are driven by complex motivational factors that require careful psychological analysis.
Marc Wilson: The Idaho Murders
Q: What is your take on the possible diagnoses mentioned in defense filings and how they could affect legal outcomes?
Diagnoses mentioned by the defense can be informative for understanding cognitive and neurodevelopmental factors, but they must be treated cautiously and not used to substitute for concrete evidence or to excuse criminal behavior; the context of how diagnoses are used in court is critical.
South Korea’s share market crash - is it an omen?
Q: How should investors think about timing and risk in late-cycle market dynamics?
Investors should avoid assuming linear, endless growth; diversify across sectors, monitor margin debt, and be mindful of cross-financing and hype around AI stocks to avoid getting caught in crowded trades.
South Korea’s share market crash - is it an omen?
Q: What does the recent crash in Korea suggest about global markets and AI-driven trades?
It highlights the risk of crowd behavior and high leverage fueling volatility, showing that even with promising AI narratives, risk concentration and overbetting can lead to sharp corrections.
The latest from the UK with André Spicer
Q: What motivates the focus on charisma in leadership, and is it enough to sustain governance?
Charisma can galvanize social change but can also lead to narcissism and poor accountability; effective leadership requires balancing charisma with emotional and practical intelligences.
