  • "Renaturing Small Spaces" Episode

This episode felt very out of touch with the reality most people face. Referring to rewilding two acres of land as a "small space" overlooks the fact that the vast majority of people don’t have access to anything near that amount of land. The segment barely acknowledged truly small spaces—like urban gardens, balconies, or window boxes—which is where many listeners actually live and seek inspiration.

It came across as a reflection of privilege, unintentionally reinforcing the idea that connecting... more

Love the show. Have you looked at Peninsula Streams work here near Victoria BC? Stream and creek restoration seems to have far reaching effects. I’m curious if the Thames is getting some restoration attention?

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Rewilding back to the Ice Age with Nikita Zimov
Q: So how are you going to do that, Nikita?
We will bring back animals and keep them in high densities long enough to have impact on the vegetation.
The crisis facing the curlew with Mary Colwell
Q: How do you feel about some of the fast starting and other Curlew initiatives that are going on where eggs are being harvested from one place where they're in danger, MOD sites, for example, and then either hatched out in incubators or put under wild Curlews?
Mary supports headstarting as a conservation tool for endangered curlews, as it helps mitigate high risks during egg and chick stages. She acknowledges it requires significant resources and commitment but believes it can be beneficial.
The crisis facing the curlew with Mary Colwell
Q: Describe to me what a healthy peatland or bog might once have been like and what the issue there is for restoring those habitats for Curlews and redshanks and all these other species that need them.
Mary describes that healthy uplands should have multiple bird species cohabiting with curlews, but stresses that curlew populations are declining too much due to various pressures. She highlights the importance of rewetted bogs for curlews, as they thrive in such wet habitats that also benefit from the storing of carbon.
The crisis facing the curlew with Mary Colwell
Q: What do we do about that? Because isn't the cutting of silage, even if you do end up mincing whatever grass snakes or hares or wading birds are nesting in those fields, isn't that an integral part of modern dairy farming?
Mary acknowledges that silage is indeed essential for modern dairy farming, causing significant challenges for nesting birds like curlews. She emphasizes the need to find a balance between food production and the protection of ground nesting birds by using precision methods to mitigate impacts on curlew nests.
The crisis facing the curlew with Mary Colwell
Q: Can you just tell me a little bit about the Curlew and about its former abundance, and why it was just such an omnipresent and important species in Britain?
Mary explains that the curlew was once widespread and common, particularly in wet grasslands, coasts, and estuaries but its numbers have dwindled dramatically over the years, declining by up to 98% in certain areas such as Ireland and Wales. She notes that the curlew's haunting call and unique presence make it a beloved and symbolic bird.
