  • Episode 25 Investment Planning Fees

Towards the end of episode 25, there was a discussion of fees for investments and planning and how, with 1.5M a person should only pay, for example, .75% for investment fees and .75 for planning (and should truly be getting both those services). My question is, of the 0.75 investment fees does that also include the MER / TER or trading fees for equites? Many financial advisors say they only charge 0.75 but then, many of the funds they are using have MERs in excess of 1%…it gets tricky trying to... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

025 | The Hidden OAS Trap Canadians Never See Coming
Q: What's the delayed CPP advantage when a spouse dies suddenly?
Delaying CPP can still provide long-term after-tax income stability; when one spouse dies, the survivor may lose the other's CPP benefit, making the decision complex and highly dependent on overall plan age and income needs.
025 | The Hidden OAS Trap Canadians Never See Coming
Q: If one stops contributing to CPP early or uses dividends, is delaying CPP still advantageous?
With fewer years of CPP contributions, the base benefit can be smaller, reducing the incremental value of delaying to 70. The decision depends on life expectancy, cash needs, and tax planning considerations.
025 | The Hidden OAS Trap Canadians Never See Coming
Q: Can the OAS clawback vary from year to year and what drives that variation?
Yes. OAS clawback varies with annual taxable income; higher income increases clawback, and there are thresholds where a portion or all OAS benefits can be clawed back depending on income.
025 | The Hidden OAS Trap Canadians Never See Coming
Q: What happens to your pension if you die before taking it, and how does survivor benefits work for CPP and defined-benefit pensions?
Old Age Security provides no survivor benefit; CPP offers a survivor benefit depending on contributions and age, and defined-benefit pensions typically have a survivor benefit that reduces payments if chosen to be higher, with more nuance based on individual plans.
030 | When Is The Best Time To Start An RRSP Meltdown?
Q: Is there any other income qualifying for income sharing besides the RIF?
Mostly only defined benefit pensions, RIFs, and LIFs qualify for pension splitting; under 65 there are more limitations, and some strategies involve spousal RSPs or other arrangements, but income splitting options are mainly tied to specific pension-type accounts and rules.
