  • Episode 25 Investment Planning Fees

Towards the end of episode 25, there was a discussion of fees for investments and planning and how, with 1.5M a person should only pay, for example, .75% for investment fees and .75 for planning (and should truly be getting both those services). My question is, of the 0.75 investment fees does that also include the MER / TER or trading fees for equites? Many financial advisors say they only charge 0.75 but then, many of the funds they are using have MERs in excess of 1%…it gets tricky trying to... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

033 | Don’t Convert Your RRSP While Working (Unless This Is You)
Q: How should one handle RIF withdrawals to avoid a large tax bill or CRA installments?
Increase withholding or installments where needed, consider government benefit tax withholdings, and aim to keep tax owing near zero by balancing withdrawals across accounts and timing with tax credits, especially around age 65.
033 | Don’t Convert Your RRSP While Working (Unless This Is You)
Q: Is it better to wait until retirement to convert RSP to a RIF or start converting earlier at 65?
The hosts explain it depends on your pre-retirement income and expected retirement tax rate; if your retirement income will be higher than your pre-retirement rate, drawing earlier can be beneficial to level the tax curve, otherwise delaying can be preferable to minimize taxes.
034 | When NOT To Delay CPP & OAS
Q: Does doing an RSP meltdown make sense when you're already in a high tax bracket?
It depends on the broader lifetime tax picture and estate goals; while the marginal rate might be high, the meltdown can offer liquidity and flexibility, especially when combined with other estate planning tools like insurance for heirs or capital gains considerations.
034 | When NOT To Delay CPP & OAS
Q: Under what conditions would it not make sense to delay CPP and OAS?
Delaying remains generally advantageous, but if you truly need the income now, have a shorter life expectancy, or rely on a bridge benefit from a pension, starting earlier (e.g., at 60 or 65) can be reasonable to ease cash flow and reduce immediate stress.
025 | The Hidden OAS Trap Canadians Never See Coming
Q: What's the delayed CPP advantage when a spouse dies suddenly?
Delaying CPP can still provide long-term after-tax income stability; when one spouse dies, the survivor may lose the other's CPP benefit, making the decision complex and highly dependent on overall plan age and income needs.
