  • Episode 25 Investment Planning Fees

Towards the end of episode 25, there was a discussion of fees for investments and planning and how, with 1.5M a person should only pay, for example, .75% for investment fees and .75 for planning (and should truly be getting both those services). My question is, of the 0.75 investment fees does that also include the MER / TER or trading fees for equites? Many financial advisors say they only charge 0.75 but then, many of the funds they are using have MERs in excess of 1%…it gets tricky trying to... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

049 | How To Actually Use A Cashflow Wedge In Retirement
Q: What is the recommended duration for a cash flow wedge?
The general guideline is three to five years of withdrawals set aside, with adjustments over time as the plan and market conditions change.
049 | How To Actually Use A Cashflow Wedge In Retirement
Q: Should you use nominal or real dollars when planning the cash flow wedge?
Plan withdrawals in nominal dollars (inflation-adjusted future dollars) but base the cash flow wedge on those nominal projections, while recognizing that the wedge itself is a flexible, non-precise target that should be reviewed annually.
048 | What Really Happens To CPP When You Retire Early
Q: If I retire between 55 and 65, can you explain how that affects CPP?
The speakers emphasize that, even with dropout years, delaying CPP often remains advantageous. The deferral benefit typically outweighs the impact of non-contributory years, and a full plan should be used to time CPP in conjunction with other retirement income.
044 | The Exact Retirement Income System Every Retiree Needs
Q: Can I unlock a LIF or LIRA if I have no RRSP room, and what are the province-specific limitations?
Yes, unlocking can be possible in some provinces, but it depends on provincial rules and it cannot usually be repeated; you still pay tax on withdrawals and should consider the overall tax impact and future income needs before proceeding.
045 | The Honest Truth About Retiring With A Mortgage
Q: What are the pros and cons of DIY planning software for retirement planning?
DIY software can give a starting point and broader view, but it isn't a substitute for professional input; interpretation and understanding of tax, income sources, and long-term cash flow are crucial.
