  • Great podcast

I’m in the twilight years of my working life and starting to plan my future retirement. This podcast is very informative and helpful, and also reassuring that I have enough. Made me think of things I hadn’t considered.

  • Informative

An interesting and informative podcast with two knowledgeable financial advisors. My criticism, however, is that the focus is very much on potential clients who are perhaps wealthier than the average person. For example their recent podcasts gave hypothetical scenarios for people with 400 - 600k pension pots. I would guess that most people nearing retirement have nowhere near that in their pensions. It would be nice to hear other scenarios where people have perhaps half that - with investment st... more

32: Retirement Planning Mistakes to Avoid at 55
Q: Can I continue to contribute to my pension while I'm in drawdown?
Yes. You can, but the amount you can contribute while drawing down is limited by the Money Purchase Annual Allowance (MPAA), which reduces tax-relief-eligible contributions to 10,000 pounds if you have taxable income from a pension. Earnings must exist to trigger the allowance; otherwise, with no earned income, the MPAA limit is not relevant beyond that reduced allowance. It's an active decision based on your overall plan and tax relief considerations.
40: Your Retirement Questions Answered: Tax-Free Cash, Pensions & Estate Planning
Q: What about small pots and how it relates to triggering the money purchase annual allowance?
Using the small pots allowance allows you to take portions of a pension without triggering the money purchase annual allowance, provided you stay within the rules (e.g., 10,000 pounds three times under certain conditions). It's important to verify eligibility with your provider and keep proper records.
40: Your Retirement Questions Answered: Tax-Free Cash, Pensions & Estate Planning
Q: If I've only taken income within my personal allowance from a pension, have I still triggered the money purchase annual allowance?
Yes. If you take any penny of taxable income from a pension, you have essentially triggered the money purchase annual allowance, which then restricts how much you can contribute in the future. The trigger is tied to crystallization and taxable income, not the tax rate.
40: Your Retirement Questions Answered: Tax-Free Cash, Pensions & Estate Planning
Q: If you were to only take 12,570 out of your pension each year in taxable income, can you essentially not pay any tax at all, even though you're not accessing your tax-free cash?
Yes, you can take taxable income up to your personal allowance so that the tax due is zero in that year. However, you must ensure you are actually using the personal allowance and understand how transfers of allowance between spouses could affect the overall tax position.
40: Your Retirement Questions Answered: Tax-Free Cash, Pensions & Estate Planning
Q: Can I choose to draw down from the taxable portion and leave tax-free cash in place so that that tax-free cash remains invested and the tax-free cash increases while only drawing on the taxable portion of the pension?
You can leave the tax-free cash in the pension and draw the taxable income from the pension, but you cannot rely on drawing only taxable income without crystallizing some tax-free cash first. In practice, you typically crystallize enough tax-free cash to enable the desired level of taxable income, and you may also consider other sources of income or investments to meet your income needs.
