  • Great podcast

I’m in the twilight years of my working life and starting to plan my future retirement. This podcast is very informative and helpful, and also reassuring that I have enough. Made me think of things I hadn’t considered.

  • Informative

An interesting and informative podcast with two knowledgeable financial advisors. My criticism, however, is that the focus is very much on potential clients who are perhaps wealthier than the average person. For example their recent podcasts gave hypothetical scenarios for people with 400 - 600k pension pots. I would guess that most people nearing retirement have nowhere near that in their pensions. It would be nice to hear other scenarios where people have perhaps half that - with investment st... more

77: Pension Transfers, Inheritance Tax & Advice Fees: Your Retirement Questions Answered
Q: How might IHT rules change when pensions fall into my estate, and what planning tools work best?
Pensions can fall into the estate under new IHT rules, and strategies like careful use of annuities, gift trusts, or drawdown can help manage IHT while preserving some income; the best approach depends on age, family situation, and estate value.
77: Pension Transfers, Inheritance Tax & Advice Fees: Your Retirement Questions Answered
Q: What about hidden charges if I retire early, especially with a defined contribution vs defined benefit pension?
Early retirement factors exist for defined benefit pensions and can impact income; the key is to understand how early access affects lifetime income and to balance with other retirement resources rather than viewing it as a simple charge.
77: Pension Transfers, Inheritance Tax & Advice Fees: Your Retirement Questions Answered
Q: Should I move my private company pension into the workplace pension to consolidate, or keep it separate to preserve options?
Moving a private company pension into the workplace scheme is worth considering when workplace plans offer lower charges and decent investment options, but you should not move if it would mean losing future employer contributions or guarantees; decisions should be driven by investment performance, charges, and overall retirement strategy.
32: Retirement Planning Mistakes to Avoid at 55
Q: Can I continue to contribute to my pension while I'm in drawdown?
Yes. You can, but the amount you can contribute while drawing down is limited by the Money Purchase Annual Allowance (MPAA), which reduces tax-relief-eligible contributions to 10,000 pounds if you have taxable income from a pension. Earnings must exist to trigger the allowance; otherwise, with no earned income, the MPAA limit is not relevant beyond that reduced allowance. It's an active decision based on your overall plan and tax relief considerations.
40: Your Retirement Questions Answered: Tax-Free Cash, Pensions & Estate Planning
Q: What about small pots and how it relates to triggering the money purchase annual allowance?
Using the small pots allowance allows you to take portions of a pension without triggering the money purchase annual allowance, provided you stay within the rules (e.g., 10,000 pounds three times under certain conditions). It's important to verify eligibility with your provider and keep proper records.
