  • Professionally made, this podcast is a pleasure to listen. Source: for many years I was a radio journalist and editor. I know what I am talking about. It is amazing how a person that had never lived in Yugoslavia has that level of knowledgable approach to our former homeland. I am also amazed by his English language skill. Continue, there are many themes that can be given here.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

[Redux] The Future of Yugonostalgia
Q: What do you see as the future of the Yugonostalgia phenomenon?
The future likely includes growing scholarly work that clarifies the complexity of socialist Yugoslavia, shifts in political landscapes as new generations assume leadership, and continued cultural expressions that cross borders while reconfiguring national narratives.
[Redux] Collective Nostalgia
Q: Can you differentiate these two types of nostalgia? I mean, beyond the obvious that one is individual, one is collective, but maybe the dynamics of them and how are they similar?
They discuss that personal nostalgia relates to individual memories and well-being, whereas collective nostalgia relates to group identity and intergroup relations, with the latter potentially guiding political attitudes and behavior and showing varying effects across groups.
[Redux] Collective Nostalgia
Q: So speaking of, do you ever in your research, I don't think I've seen that, do you make the distinction between the reflective and restorative nostalgia that Svetlana Boym has used or established as a kind of an important distinction of the two nostalgias, of basically what the nostalgia is trying to achieve and what its effects are on the individuals?
The guest expresses critical nuance about the reflective-restorative distinction, suggesting that restorative nostalgia appears in political discourse and can mobilize exclusionary viewpoints, while reflective nostalgia is not simply thinking about the past but involves an emotional longing tied to identity and group dynamics.
[Fragment] The Track
Q: What kept you going in documenting the lives of these athletes?
The connection with the team and the fascination with the track and its history.
[Fragment] IKEA for YU
Q: Can you elaborate on the mentality of living in a country that fell apart?
Ratković Vidaković discusses the burden of living in a changing political landscape in Croatia, highlighting her feelings of wanting to raise her child in a different environment away from historical struggles.
