  • I was left puzzled by this episode on North Korea. Presumably the regime doesn't survive on thin air. The fact that it's a corrupt regime, with nuclear weapons, pre - supposes that there is an economy that generates some wealth to be sidelined into those activities and an educated workforce to sustain it. The podcast gave no clue whatsoever as to what the source of this wealth might be. What do North Koreans actually do in their daily lives? Are there any public services; how are they run?

  • The bunker could be a great, off mainstream podcast, however…..

As per my headline this podcast could be great. I thought it had purported to be a non biased podcast with intellectual argument from both sides of the political spectrum which is very hard to find these days.

Unfortunately, there are some impressive hosts eg Raphael,

But some shockingly unimpressive hosts …. Jarvis today, for example, mocking and denigrating reform voters. I am not a reform voter, but want a reasoned argument on all sides.

I had thought about becoming a subscriber, but now ... more

Hey guys go mad and get Ian back on too. Just like the old days of Brexit angst.

  • Something for everyone (with a liberal focus)

The bunker started off just before the pandemic really came into view, from the team that brought you Remainiacs. That became Oh God What Now and for some time the bunker consisted of panel episodes, but additionally also daily episodes on selected topics.

In its current format the episodes are almost entirely the daily specials, somewhat rivalling the Guardian’s ‘today in focus’, sometimes but not exclusively on subjects concerning the day’s news.

Some episodes won’t interest everyone but ... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

How to Fix the USA – Escaping the Two Party Trap
Q: What are the areas of the system that you think need addressing?
The first priority is changing how we choose representatives, including moving toward proportional representation and ending winner-take-all primaries, which would diversify voices and reduce 100% representation for narrow electorates. Other priorities include overturning Citizens United, campaigning money reform, and instituting strong limits on gerrymandering to align representation more closely with votes.
Musk will tear us apart? – The national security emergency we need to tackle
Q: What's your sense of the dynamics of culture and economics in this radicalization of people that have pulled apart social cohesion?
It's both economics and culture; economic stagnation influences how people feel and act, but there are deliberate efforts to unpick social relationships that go beyond GDP figures, with external actors exploiting grievances to sow division.
World War Trade – How tariffs became Trump’s weapon of economic destruction
Q: Why did tariffs become Trump's preferred instrument in particular?
Richard Baldwin explains that tariffs function as political theater more than a precise economic policy, signaling to his base that he is fighting for them, and that there was little to no coherent plan behind the tariffs beyond public signaling and nationalist messaging.
North Korea's fragile future – What comes after Kim Jong Un?
Q: How might regional powers like China and Russia react to a leadership change in North Korea?
Feifield notes China's priority is stability on its borders and preventing large refugee flows, while Russia's evolving ties with North Korea add strategic leverage; both would influence any leadership transition and seek to maintain the regime's stability.
North Korea's fragile future – What comes after Kim Jong Un?
Q: What are the prospects for succession and the role of his family in the regime's future?
The guest outlines that Kim has signaled his daughter as a potential successor and relies on his sister Kim Yo-jong, but cautions that the Confucian-patriarchal system makes a smooth transfer to a young female ruler difficult, possibly resulting in a military-led or regent-led transition.
