  • Top notch

Great pod, Jarrod in the very top echelon of cricket writers/commentators/entertainers. Would enjoy it more if Behram could stop shouting and interrupting Jarrod tho

  • Always worth a listen

Generally great and really well-informed cricket chat. Occasionally slips into variations on the theme of ‘Are England actually rubbish’ from an Australian and Indian perspective which, as an Englishman, can get a bit tiresome. But always done intelligently

  • Best cricket podcast

Good Areas is by far the best cricket podcast aimed at serious cricket fans. Love Jarrod’s analysis and all the content he does and especially enjoying the KimAppa series with Robbie. Great to get an insight from someone who has played at the highest level who is able to talk freely about the sport and its characters.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

What do you think the role of a captain actually is in modern cricket? | Wagon Wheel
Q: Given how much of the eventual decision-making sits with the coaches, analysts, and maybe a bigger on-field leadership group of players, is there still a strong case for concentrating the authority in one player?
Yes, captains remain the central on-field decision-makers, with coaches and analysts providing crucial information, while leadership groups serve to support and translate that information to players, rather than delegating decisions away from the captain.
What do you think the role of a captain actually is in modern cricket? | Wagon Wheel
Q: Like Abe has, so you can go to Good Areas live podcast, and you can find us over there. But he has said, what do you think the role of a captain actually is in modern cricket?
The captain still holds significant on-field authority; leadership groups exist to facilitate communication and specialized support, not to replace the captain's decision-making, and the best teams use leadership structures to relay information quickly and effectively during play.
Who wins in an Old Cricket Man Yelling At Clouds contest? | Wagon Wheel
Q: Do you think test cricket remains the dominant format in England and Australia, while T20 takes over elsewhere?
The guest (host) suggests that attendances have varied historically by country and that while England and Australia maintain strong test followings, other nations have seen more pronounced shifts toward short-format games, influenced by pricing, marketing, and broadcasting arrangements.
An example where the use of data has made cricket worse? | Wagon Wheel
Q: What is your view on how data influences coaching decisions in modern cricket?
Data can help, but it can also mislead if treated as absolutist; the key is using it to inform strategy while keeping flexibility and human insight.
England's Wrong Length with Steve Harmison | Red Inker (Ad Free)
Q: What was worse for England, the batting or the bowling in this series?
The batting was more disappointing as they consistently put themselves under pressure, while the bowlers were getting wickets.
