  • Innings of The Ashes?

I’m just confirming i heard it correctly, that a third innings (superb) ton by Jacob Bethell in a dead series (we also lost the test match) is being touted as the “innings of the (last) Ashes” on this podcast, by so-called experts! Personally i’d put Travis Head’s tons at Perth and Adelaide that led to victories and a series win every time! We know Bethell has bags of potential, which he’s single handedly doing his best to undo, but previous comments like “he’s going to be the best batter in the... more

  • Ollie Robinson

An excellent review as always on the start of the county season. It did dawn on me, based on Ashes events (pre and during), what on earth did Ollie Robinson do to be jettisoned by the England management? The mind boggles!!!

  • The hundred saga

Very surprised and disappointed to hear Booth suggest the current issue regarding Pakistani players at the hundred is a problem of ‘perception’.

How about a problem of xenophobia, discrimination, employment law and of bringing outside geopolitics into sport? The perception is the tip of a very murky and frankly unpalatable iceberg. Yet again the lesson cricket is teaching…..filthy lucre always wins kids!!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Butch on England's spin options, Marcus North for national selector & Cam Steel on the county grind
Q: Is there a standout candidate right now?
No single standout has emerged; the panel contemplates a candidate who can grow into the role and provide value across different phases of a match, possibly even a longer-term 'project' pick.
Butch on England's spin options, Marcus North for national selector & Cam Steel on the county grind
Q: What type of spinner should England look for in the early part of the summer?
The discussion suggests preferring a bowler who can hold up an end, bowl economically, contribute with the bat, and be adaptable across conditions, rather than a purely wicket-taking specialist.
“It’s disruptive” | England vs New Zealand series preview & the impact of Nat Sciver-Brunt’s injury
Q: How does the leadership change with Charlie Dean taking captaincy for the ODIs when Sciver-Brunt is out?
Dean is portrayed as a quiet but highly tactical leader, capable of guiding the team's field placements and match management, which could suit a transitioning squad.
“It’s disruptive” | England vs New Zealand series preview & the impact of Nat Sciver-Brunt’s injury
Q: What do you think England's top order will look like in the absence of Nat Sciver-Brunt?
The hosts seem likely to push someone like Emma Lamb or Capsie up the order, with Knight possibly dropping to four to anchor the middle order, while Grewcock or Dean could fill other key roles depending on form and fitness.
Actor Rory Kinnear on his love for cricket, watching Surrey & a special fondness for Dom Sibley
Q: What drew you to cricket originally?
He started playing at school, enjoyed batting and fielding, and grew fond of the game as a way to spend time and observe psychology and strategy.
