  • Promoting her business

She just talks about her pain. Also she promotes her business over actual treatment for eating disorders.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#188: The Recovery Advice I DON’T Agree With (And Why It Might Be Keeping You Stuck)
Q: Susan asks how to know when recovery structure is actually helpful or just another form of eating-disorder control.
Danie explains that structure is beneficial in the early stages, but it becomes problematic when it becomes inflexible or non-negotiable; the key is to maintain some spontaneity and adapt the plan to the person's current stage, aiming for freedom rather than a strict rule-book.
#186: Eating Disorder Q&A - Feeling “Not Sick Enough,” Food Obsession & Recovery Fear
Q: Does the food obsession go away in recovery, or does the brain stay obsessed around food forever?
The obsession often peaks during energy deficits or prolonged malnutrition but tends to lessen as you restore regular, ample nourishment. Consistent eating reduces mental hunger, and over time your brain learns to trust that food is available, easing the fixation.
#186: Eating Disorder Q&A - Feeling “Not Sick Enough,” Food Obsession & Recovery Fear
Q: How do you rebuild your identity when your eating disorder became your personality?
Identity reshaping in recovery is challenging but essential. Your eating disorder isn't your true self; you're a person with humor, creativity, and needs beyond control or restriction. Recovery invites rediscovery and redefinition of self, not erasure of who you are.
#186: Eating Disorder Q&A - Feeling “Not Sick Enough,” Food Obsession & Recovery Fear
Q: Recovery has honestly been harder emotionally than I expected. Is it normal to grieve your eating disorder during recovery?
Completely normal. Grief arises as you let go of a coping system that once kept you safe. It's common to miss parts of the eating disorder, but that doesn't mean you should return to it—it's about allowing yourself to feel and heal, while gradually rebuilding with healthier strategies.
#186: Eating Disorder Q&A - Feeling “Not Sick Enough,” Food Obsession & Recovery Fear
Q: Hi, Danie. I feel really alone in this. From the outside my life looks fine, but internally food and my body consume my mind almost every second of the day. Did you ever struggle with feeling invalid because your eating disorder didn't look obvious to other people?
Yes, that feeling is common and dangerous; many people with high-functioning or quasi-recovery eating disorders feel unseen because their symptoms aren't visibly dramatic. Validation is needed that eating disorders can be present at any weight or appearance, and recovery involves addressing the underlying thoughts and coping mechanisms, not just physical symptoms.
