  • Chris is one of the most insightful professionals in world of recovery

I am writing this review to thank Chris for his incredible pro bono work for those that are struggling. Chris's work in the field is by far the most professional and efficient way to recovery I have witnessed. After receiving both impatiant and outpatiant treatment many times over the last couple of decades, I found his principles to be the best aprouch to true full recovery. As we all need to find our own road, his was the the right one for me. Highly recommend him!!

Talking Points

358: CBT For Eating Disorders, Chronic Pain, Insomnia, Depression, Diabetes and GLP-1’s with Jennifer Averyt
Q: What role does CBT play across the different health concerns you treat?
CBT is adapted to each condition, starting with psychoeducation about symptom development, then addressing behaviors (like regular eating for eating disorders or pacing for chronic pain) and using cognitive strategies only when appropriate. Integration with ACT and values work helps tailor treatment to what matters most to the patient.
358: CBT For Eating Disorders, Chronic Pain, Insomnia, Depression, Diabetes and GLP-1’s with Jennifer Averyt
Q: How do you navigate working in medical settings where weight-focused messages are common?
I acknowledge the realities of medical systems but continue to advocate weight-inclusive care by collaborating with dietitians, educating colleagues, and using case conceptualization to show how external pressures contribute to eating disorder symptoms and how treatment can focus on behavior and nourishment.
358: CBT For Eating Disorders, Chronic Pain, Insomnia, Depression, Diabetes and GLP-1’s with Jennifer Averyt
Q: What drew you to work in health psychology and these specific areas like diabetes and eating disorders?
My path started with an interest in health and biology, then psychology, and a pivotal course on eating disorders and diabetes guided me toward CBT and health psychology. I was drawn to how CBT could address both behavioral and physiological aspects of these conditions and how weight-inclusive approaches could improve care.
357: Planning vs Flexibility, Eating “Bad” Food, Dealing With Numbers on the Scale, and Recovery During Menopause
Q: How do you balance recovery focus with living as the new person who doesn't have issues with food and exercise?
The approach is to gradually expand life while maintaining recovery practices, recognizing that early recovery may require more planning and that over time you can live more freely as you reinforce new habits and coping skills.
356: Anxiety, OCD, and Eating Disorders with Dana Colthart
Q: How do you integrate ACT with ERP when treating OCD and eating disorders?
ACT is used to increase psychological flexibility, helping clients observe thoughts without getting entangled, identify values, and choose actions aligned with those values rather than reactive avoidance, while ERP provides the behavioral exposure needed to reduce fear.
