Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep 195, Best kept turkey hunting secret / David Westmoreland
Q: How has the role of gear changed from your early days to now, and what gear has had the biggest impact on success?
Decoys, blinds, and to a lesser extent calls, revolutionized turkey hunting by enabling ambush-style setups and better call responsiveness. The evolution from simple decoys to life-like, flocked, motion-enabled variants dramatically increased hit rates.
Ep 195, Best kept turkey hunting secret / David Westmoreland
Q: If you were introducing someone to bow hunting turkeys today, what are the top three items they should have or plan for?
Focus on securing a blind, a decoy, and a reliable call, with time in the field to practice placement, field-time scouting, and understanding bird movement. The conversation emphasizes starting with the basics to reduce early mistakes and gradually adding gear as skills mature.
Don't Live Off Your Cameras: Finding Big Bucks Before The Rut | Raised Hunting Podcast #170
Q: When should I know it is time to pack up and move my focus elsewhere on the property?
The host emphasizes the importance of being adaptive and suggests spending time observing the property to understand deer behavior, instead of solely relying on trail cameras.
Don't Live Off Your Cameras: Finding Big Bucks Before The Rut | Raised Hunting Podcast #170
Q: Would it be good to put a food plot in when you hunt in between crop fields or just put a mineral block and have a rub tree or mock scrape?
The hosts discuss that it could be beneficial to have a food plot, but if the crop fields are close enough, it might not be necessary because the deer are likely to visit those instead.
Where Are Big Bucks Bedding: Patterning And Scouting Whitetails | Raised Hunting Podcast #161
Q: Do cameras scare deer?
Yes, some deer appear to react negatively to camera presence, especially cell cameras, while traditional cameras may not elicit the same response.
