  • Great content

As a practicing community pharmacist in regional NSW, I really enjoy the wide variety of content. I find it an easy way to boost my knowledge as a busy, working mum of 5 kids! One small critique I would make is the audio quality (particularly of the guests), could improve. Sometimes when I’m driving or if other background noise is loud, I am unable to hear or understand the guest speakers and I have to stop listening midway. Otherwise, a great podcast that fills a needed gap in the Australian ph... more

  • Informative listening

Thanks for bringing out these episode, they’re a big help in keeping me up to date!

The only other thing I’d like to mention is that the sound quality on these episodes can be really variable, some are easy listening and some are quiet and crackly. It would be great if the sound quality could be edited before upload.

  • Insightful and educational

When prioritising time, continuing education often comes low on my to-do list. This podcast is a way to fit CPD into my busy day, while I’m out for a walk, doing the housework or driving my car.

Sometimes the content is reviewing topics with which I’m already familiar, often updated with new guidelines and recommendations and sometimes there are topics I’ve not learnt before. I have even implemented the knowledge gained in the podcasts into my everyday practice.

Would recommend to any Austra... more

  • Bandwagon

I’ve only recently found this podcast although I’ve been a pharmacist for a long time.

Great variety of topics, easy enough to listen to while doing chores, driving etc; but also interesting and in-depth enough to learn something from every episode.

Thank you to all who work on this podcast!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

PPP 187 - Menopause Part 1 with Prof Susan Davis
Q: What factors influence the decision to initiate or continue MHT beyond basic symptom relief?
Consider bone density, cardiovascular risk, breast cancer risk, age and time since menopause, parity and family history, and patient preferences; treatment should be individualized rather than following a fixed duration rule, and de-prescribing should be considered if contraindications arise.
PPP 187 - Menopause Part 1 with Prof Susan Davis
Q: How is MHT typically started and what are the main indications?
MHT is started to relieve menopausal symptoms and to prevent rapid bone loss; it is often begun with cyclical hormones and may transition to continuous therapy, with choices between estrogen-only or combination regimens depending on whether the patient has a uterus, and balancing breast cancer risk considerations.
PPP 187 - Menopause Part 1 with Prof Susan Davis
Q: What is the rationale behind avoiding blood hormone testing in women over 45?
Blood hormone levels fluctuate widely during the menopause transition and do not reliably indicate whether a woman is menopausal; clinical symptoms and bleeding patterns provide a more consistent basis for diagnosis in this age group.
PPP 179 - Rhinitis with Prof Pete Smith
Q: What are some red flags that community pharmacists should be considering for a referral for a patient?
Loss of smell, use of oral steroids, unilateral symptoms, recurrent nosebleeds, and lack of response to nasal steroids are key red flags.
PPP 179 - Rhinitis with Prof Pete Smith
Q: When would we be using antihistamines for patients with allergic rhinitis?
Antihistamines are indicated for minor symptoms such as a runny nose and can improve symptom scores by about 7-8%.
