  • Good content but could improve audio quality and delivery for increased engagement

This is informative and has up-to-date content for Australian medical practitioners and students. However, the audio quality could be improved and the podcast could be delivered in a more engaging way.

  • Normally great

I normally love this podcast and find it very informative. However, in the most recent episode (ep 179) one of the guests seemed to be answering questions posed by the host by reading from a pre-prepared answer sheet. This was very disengaging and did not make for a good listener experience. I hope future guests are more respectful to their hosts and listeners by answering questions through a more spontaneous, conversation-style means.

  • Sound Engineering could be improved

Often interesting topics, but difficult to listen to due to poor mike placement, frequency compensation and reverb.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

E217 - Emergency contraception: an overview
Q: How do the two oral options differ in their mechanism and timing
Levonorgestrel delays ovulation by acting as a synthetic progesterone, whereas ulipristal acetate is a progesterone receptor modulator with a similar goal of delaying ovulation and can be effective later in the cycle, even through the LH surge as long as ovulation has not yet occurred.
E217 - Emergency contraception: an overview
Q: To start, Jo, what types of emergency contraception are currently available in Australia?
There are two oral options, levonorgestrel and ulipristal acetate, with the copper IUD as a non-oral option. Levonorgestrel works best earlier after unprotected sex and is effective up to about 72 hours (and possibly to 96 hours), while ulipristal acetate can be effective up to 5 days. The copper IUD offers the most flexibility, usable up to 5 days after intercourse or the earliest ovulation date.
E214 - Therapeutic Guidelines Kidney and Urinary
Q: What are the key pharmacologic options you discuss for slowing CKD progression, and how do they fit into practice?
ACE inhibitors or ARBs, SGLT2 inhibitors, and in some cases newer agents such as non-steroidal MRAs and GLP-1 receptor agonists can be used depending on comorbidities and patient tolerance, with careful monitoring of renal function and cardiovascular risk.
E214 - Therapeutic Guidelines Kidney and Urinary
Q: How do you approach screening your patients for CKD in everyday practice?
We should screen more regularly than we currently do, focusing on ACR, blood pressure, and creatinine-based eGFR, with annual screening for those at higher risk or with a history of risk factors.
E213 - Metabolic dysfunction–associated fatty liver disease an update
Q: What are the surveillance recommendations for HCC in MAFLD patients?
Surveillance is advised for those with cirrhosis (6-monthly ultrasound ± AFP); for those without cirrhosis, the annual risk is very low, so routine surveillance is not recommended.
